When is baby ready for "big boy bed"?

When did you determine your little one was ready to move out of the crib?  We're expecting #2 and DS will only be 21m old by then and I'm not sure if I should get a second crib for the new baby or just "move up" DS to a regular bed.  All input appreciated!

  • It's a tough call.  Some kids move easily at that age and some don't.  I think you definitely need to move them if/when they start climbing out of the crib because it's not safe.  Otherwise, I see no reason to move them til they're potty training at night.  ;)  But having a second makes for a complication - it seems silly to buy a second crib, but you don't want to push the first one out too soon.

We moved Ben out this summer, but he was over 2 1/2.  ANd he did great.  He was a really good sleeper by then and we moved him to a toddler bed shaped like a car, so that was exciting and fun too.

I guess you could wait and see and give it a try and then if it doens't work, put him back in his crib and quick buy a new one.   Or also, you could keep #2 in a bassinette for longer and wait til that transition time and your first child will be older then.

  • We haven't moved DS yet but are thinking about it and will likely buy a bed soon.  I think it would have been hard at 21 months but we probably would have done it if we had another one to take the crib.  You could keep new baby in a PNP or bassinet until too big to avoid  having 2 cribs.

  • DD started climbing out of her crib at 18 months.  We waited to convert her crib to a big girl bed until she was in her new room, but we should have done it months before.  We made the switch at 21 months and she LOVES her big girl bed.

We were buying a new crib for DS, so that was not a factor.  DH was set on using her crib as a convertible toddler bed, then we'll go to a full in a few years.

It really depends on your child when you make the switch!
