What are symptoms of reflux?

I know that seems like kind of a silly question, but I really don't know the difference between "regular" baby spit-up and what would get diagnosed as reflux.  Tyler seems to be having some issues, and I was just curious what to look for.  Thanks.

Re: What are symptoms of reflux?

  • It's confusing isn't it?  As I understand it, most babies have the clinical definition of reflux to a certain degree, since spitting up=reflux.  They will eventually outgrow it once the sphincter that hold the stomach contents down strengthens.  The true question is whether it seems to bother them or not.  With my kids, they both spit up in copious amounts, but it never seemed to bother them.  I believe the symptoms to look for are arching back during/after feedings, crying out in pain from laying down, not gaining weight well, trouble breathing, and poor feedings. In that case, treatment may be warranted.

I'd definitely ask your pedi if you're concerned.  HTH!

  • DS would spit up all the time.  I had a cloth diaper on my shoulder at all times.  His doctor said as long as he was a "happy spitter" that he was fine.  If it became obvious that he was uncomfortable and spitting up, then we would have considered another route.

  • Ava was diagnosed with reflux b/c she was fussy during/after feedings and didn't like laying flat due to her discomfort.  She actually wasn't a big spitter upper when she was first diagnosed (that came later when we were bottle feeding more than BFing).  She was prescribed Zantac, which actually didn't help much IMHO.  I would wear her in my sling, let her sleep in the sling, etc. so that she was always upright, and that helped more than anything else.  If Tyler seems happy when he's upright and fussy when laying flat, or if he's just generally fussy, those could be symptoms of reflux.  If not, and he's just spitting up, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
