3rd Trimester

Dental Work WWYD?

I need a root canal so bad and I am in super pain. I was told not to go to the DDS but wonder if I went without pain meds and only used the novicaine shot in my gums if I could do it. Otherwise I have ot been in horrible pain for another two months - I don;t know if I can take it. WWYD?

Re: Dental Work WWYD?

  • i'd def go to the dentist.  you can't avoid getting this done...a cavity, i'd wait, or a few other things...but if you don't take care of a root canal, you'll absess...and continue to do so...so fighting infections + pain meds is more harmful to the baby than some novacain (which is a local) IMHO.  Certainly run it by your OB as well as your dentist...but sh#t happens...and you have to take care of it.

  • I had an abcessed tooth pulled at 15wks with novicaine shots and tylenol 3 presctiption (as well as an antibiotic prescription to ward off infection) and I had no issues after that.........................they really just don't want you to have the Gas...thats not good for your or baby but in all seriousness, if your in pain....get something done about it now because the stress/pain/toxins that can leak from an infected tooth into your blood stream are not good for you or baby.

i suggest you have it taken care of.

  • I had dental work done in my 2nd trimester.  They were able to numb me but were only able to use a certain anesthetic.  It was no big deal.  Dentist and OB said it was much better to take care of the problem than to let it go.

  • Definitely go see the dentist.  (I am one.)  The dentist can use Mepivacaine (an anesthetic without epinephrine).  Epi is what dr's worry about in pregnant women.  It is much more beneficial to you and baby to get the infection OUT of your body now.

  • I have the same problem. My dentist cleaned it out as best he could with out having to give me any meds and put a temporary filling in. It has fell out already and he has put another one in. I have my root canal set up for right after I give birth. Hope you feel better!
  • I had a bridge done at about 16 weeks. Obviously had to be numb for that. But as long as your dentist knows you are pregnant, I think you should be okay. I didn't take any pain meds after besides extra strength tylenol and was a little sore, but after a few days i was fine.
  • My dentist wont' really do anything but an emergency in the 3rd tri.  The numbing meds they use have different effects during the 3rd trimester (or so they told me).  They said it can cause pre-term labor.

Ditto this from another dentist :)  What you are experiencing is considered an emergency due to your pain and can be treated safely even in your 3rd tri.

  • You are NEVER to delay dental work especially in pregnancy.  It can cause premature labor, infection, and even death!   I had a root canal at 34 weeks with my first born and never had any problems.  I had oral surgery with this baby at 28 weeks and had no problems.  My doctor ok'd it and said def. go get it done for the facts I stated above.  I was on antibiotics and tylenol 3.  Baby and I are still doing wonderful!  Def. go get it taken care of!
  • I've had 2 root canals and all they've ever done was novicaine for it.
