High-Risk Pregnancy

Did anyone's GD go away after diagnosis?

So, after failing both blood glucose tests, I was diagnosed with GD last week.  So, per the routine my OB recommended, I got a glucometer and have been testing my blood before and after every meal for a few days now.

All of my readings are in the totally normal range.  They aren't even on the high side of the normal range ... they have been totally normal glucose levels.  Has anyone's GD 'gone away' like this?  I talked to my OBs office today to discuss this, and they are totally puzzled by it, too.  And I'm certain that I'm using the glucometer properly, too.    My OB didn't put me on any drugs, nor I have I changed my diet at all since my appointment to discuss GD.  (They haven't been able to find a nutritionist/diabetes educator who has any appointments available.)  It's totally weird.

Re: Did anyone's GD go away after diagnosis?

  • I didn't change much about my diet after being diagnosed with GD, and my readings are always normal. I am completely diet controlled. Remember that your body will become more insulin resistant as the pregnancy progresses. So even though you may be borderline now, your body will likely struggle later in the pregnancy.

FYI -- I had asked the diabetes educator about possibly being misdiagnosed after getting all my normal readings regularly, and she said not possible!

  • Mine was like this and still is. But because of the baby's size they are reducing my blood sugar criteria. I am able to get most of my numbers within the new range through diet but my fasting is still above 80. I am seeing a peri tomorrow because my blood sugar has always been well within the limits and I only failed the test by 1 point on 1 blood draw. So before starting insulin based on 1 size measurement I'm seeing a specialist to discuss options, causes and benefits of insulin.

  • I'm not even borderline, though.  I'm totally normal, well below the cut off for GD.  On the 3 hour test, only two of my four readings were above normal.  And all of my fasting numbers are below 80.  Obviously, I'm not going to push my luck and pig out on Halloween candy or anything, but my levels are totally normal.

Failing 2 or more, is an indicator of GD.  I had no issues eating pretty much whatever with my first 2 pregnancies... This time though, I had to be put on insulin.  As PP said, you may see those numbers start to change as you progress further in your pregnancy.
