So, I keep getting unsolicited advice that I should have a beer a day..."it'll bring your milk in." I have probably had 5 glasses of wine since the girls were born and if I do drink a glass I don't nurse/pump for at least 2 hours. My husband says I overreact with regards to alcohol. My OB used the saying "safe to drive, safe to nurse"
For those of you who nurse do you drink? What are your rules if you do?
Re: BFing Moms: Drinking & Nursing?
ps - wine won't help your milk, it'll actually dehydrate you, and possible lower supply. BEER did help my supply. Esp Guiness.
I drank a bit. I followed the "safe to drive, safe to nurse" theory, but rarely did she even nurse at night, and I didn't have any wine until after she was in bed. (and then I was too tired to even finish a glass)
If I did drink post-bedtime, and she did get up... I gave her a bottle. just to be sure.
Happy moms make happy babies, I say ;-)
This, I usually did it after the last feeding session of the night.
My personal rules are that I for the most part don't. There we a few times my supply would drop and I would have such anxiety about him starving that I had 1/3 or 1/2 a beer and it did help for the nursing session I did it for but it is not a long term solution for increasing supply, unless you drink all day long, and that isn't for me. When DS turned 9 months I finally had a actual drink, at happy hour and went home and nursed that night. He slept like normal and seemed fine.
If you are looking for permission to have a beer because you want it then I say go for it! Don't go crazy like your Dr said if you can drive then you can BF. However if you are just caving under peer preasure then stay strong. Just because I have had a drink here and there doesn't mean you have to.
I'm not a drinker, but occasionally I will partake in an alocholic beverage (like 1-2 / month if we have company over dinner).
I've been following the "safe to drive, safe to nurse" approach. As alcohol dissipates in BM at the same rate as in your blood-stream, I won't pump and dump... just wait it out. But then again, supply was never in abundance for me so every drop of milk was precious
