3rd Trimester

does your doc let you choose...induction vs. going naturally.

at my last appointment, my doc basically said "be thinking about what you guys want to do regarding being induced or going natural." do you get to choose? what are the pros and cons of both?

i know there are some strong opinions about being induced. .i just want to know why. TIA!

Re: does your doc let you choose...induction vs. going naturally.

  • he could mean if you go overdue.

I had to ask my doc yesterday about induction because of timelines we have with moving to Korea and he said it was up to me and if the baby was in the right position.

  • why would your dr be saying that at 27 wks? i would think if you were getting past your due date then talk about induction. are you talking about going med free vs. getting drugs? Im confused.

i'm getting an epidural. i'm confused too. i'm pretty sure he said i can be induced sometime after 39 weeks as long as the baby is measuring on track.

  • Our OB lets us make out own decision on it. She said anytime after 38 weeks we can schedule an induction if we want, for 39+ weeks.

Seems a little early to bring it up with you already! I had to bring it up with our OB

the question here is if your doctor is giving you the choice not if you choose to do it or not.    And I bet if there was medical need to you need to be induced you would.

I was induced with ds1 because my liver was shutting down, it was either get him out and we both live or keep him in and both could die. When you are faced with that you look at things alot different.

  • I wouldnt want to be induced either. I would like nature to run its course naturally. Why would you want to be induced unless the baby is in danger or if your in danger (high risk pregnancy) plus the contractions are alot harder to deal with than going natural.

Inductions have their place (medical necessity) but an induced labor tends to be harder on both mom and baby and tends to lead to other interventions especially if done before mom's body is ready for labor.  An induction done too early can increase your odds of emergency c-section by as much as 50%.

Also, although it can be done, it's much more difficult to go epi free.  You can easily end up in the whole cascade of interventions routine.

Well no sh!it.  We're talking about people who choose to be induced for NO medical reason.  Like my friend. That turned out real well.  snort.

You're right.  If there was a medical need I would be induced.  If I were just asked "would you like to go natural or would you like to be induced" I would never choose the induction

She does ask what the pros and cons are of being induced v. not being induced which does open this up to anti-induction responses

yeah but you didnt give pros and cons you just stated you would never do it, so not answer the question still.

To the OP yes if your body is not ready induction can be rough on your body, but on the other hand a induction can just be as smooth as going naturally, just as naturally can be just as hard.   Its is dependent on your body and baby.

  • You ALWAYS have a choice. You don't ever have to consent to induction or c-section. Big Smile

If they're talking about pain relief well you still have plenty of time to decide what you want to do. I'm going to try to go natural this time because I've had epidurals before and I just want to do things differently this time.

In that case, I fail to see where you answered the question either

    Here we go, I'll answer

    Pros:
For the type As, it's easier to plan

    Cons:
    More difficult labor
    Greater likelihood of c-section
Probably will end up with an epidural which has it's own set of side effects and complications
    Google pit to distress
Continuous monitoring is required, greatly limiting mobility

    I'm sure there are others

  • To the OP

You can 100% tell the doctor "Yes I want to go natural on my own and have no intervention to start labor"

    Or you can tell them

"I would like to be induced any time after 39 weeks, I do not mind the side affects"

Just make sure you ask that your bishop score be over 10 before doing it.

  • I agree 100% with smilelari.

You wanted the pros & cons & she gave them.

I would always, always prefer to go into labor on my own, even though I'm getting an epidural & am not afraid of a c/s.  However, I'm looking at an induction next Friday at 41 weeks, 5 days.  They do have their place medically & come next Friday, that place will have occurred more than likely.

  • I would sure hope you get to choose. Otherwise I'd be shopping for a new OB.

I don't want to be induced unless absolutely necessary (or seriously overdue).

    This.

It seems this is EXACTLY what the OP asked - opinions on why or why not to get induced for NO medical reason.  This poster isn't saying she is anti induction for medical emergency.  Confused about the backlash, personally...she just honestly answered the question.  I feel the exact same way about inductions.  It's not "shoving your opinions down someone's throat" when they ask for your opinion.

  • My doc said we could induce when I was full term if we wanted since the rut is coming up.  I think that's a great reason to induce lol.

Same here Blair.  I do have qualms about being induced...especially if you're not ready. (Which, to the OP, 39 weeks seems a little early considering my experience.)  When you are induced you are given synthetic drugs that only simulate your body's natural means of starting labor.  For me, I'd rather have the "real" hormones instead of a manmade concoction.

  • My OB doesn't induce before 41 weeks unless it's medically necessary, and I like that approach. The more overdue the baby, the more complications there can be such a low amniotic fluid and risk of a cord accident.

and the 16th! Beer  We are goddesses of babies at 41 weeks, 5 days.

& I think we should both stick up our middle fingers to those dates & go into labor on our own tomorrow.  Excellent plan!

This. However, I'm also not comfortable going past 41 weeks, just because of placenta issues. My MW doesn't think this is going to be a problem though, so I'm trying not to worry about it.
