NPR: Talk to me about flat-irons

Ok, I'm finally past the denial - it has taken 5 years - that my hair will go back to normal from the frizzy wavy mess it is now. I hate it. I used to have shiny, straight easy to manage hair and now it's a big fuzzy mess. I've never owned a flat-iron (and truthfully I'm a little scared I'm going to burn myself), but I can't take it any more. Anything in particular I should look out for, or avoid?? Any tips?

TIA!

  • i love mine - it's a ceramic one that I got at a salon.  Make sure you get one that has an auto shutoff!

  • how much do you want to spend?

I'd check folica.com - they have good reviews and prices.  If you're willing to spend around $100, the Sedu is really good.  If you want to spend more, the GHD is the best thing I've ever owned.  I bought mine 2 years ago, and it's seriously awesome [still!].

  • Spend the money and get a good one.  Otherwise you will go insane :)
  • I bought a Chi years ago and still love it, although I have no time anymore for those details unless we have a date night or something.
  • Thanks ladies, I knew you'd point me in the right direction. Folica is a great site, thanks Eclairs!
  • I used to have a Chi (loved it) and then I remembered that my hair is already super straight so there's no point in wasting my time with a flat iron.  So I donated it to SIL.
