WWYD if you got a parking ticket with the wrong license plate#?

I'm not 100% sure that it's wrong but I'm pretty sure my plate starts with a V and not a W like it says on the ticket. If I confirm that it's the wrong plate #, should I toss the ticket? All other info on the ticket is correct so I know it's my car.

  • well you are supposed to send it back with a not guilty, no?

  • I'd be too afraid they'd track me down somehow (although, a friend in college gave his name--Brett--and the cop wrote the ticket--public urination, naturally--for Brent [very common last name] and he never paid it or addressed it, knowing they couldn't track him down).

  • Personally, I'd call and ask.  I've had my DL# written wrong on a ticket, but was still responsible.  I wouldn't want it to come back and bite me.
  • I've always been told that if any information is wrong on a ticket, it's invalid and you can contest it. But I'm not 100% sure.

  • I'll confess that when I got a parking ticket with the wrong plate numbers I decided it wasn't my problem.  I figured the likelihood that whoever had the plate # they did put on likely didn't also have a blue VW so it would be easy for them to prove it wasn't them and NYC gets enough of my money is stupid parking tickets (like when I got a ticket for no front plate before I noticed my plate was gone... and I know for a fact it had been there when I parked the night before!).
