My EDD was October 21st and I was convinced that I was going to have a late, big baby. I even posted on here saying I hoped I went to 41 weeks. Well, my LO had other plans. At 1:30 am on October 1st my water broke while I was laying in bed. After freaking out for about 5 minutes I called in my DH and we finished packing our bags. FYI: 90% of what you pack you will not use.
We got to the hospital around 2:15 am and was admitted probably around 3:00. I was not having significant contractions and was only dilated to 1 cm so at 5:00 am they started a Pitocin drip. This was kind of a bummer b/c I really wanted to start labor naturally, but I understand why it was necessary. I started feeling my contractions around 6:30 am and at around 8:00 am I needed to start breathing through because they were intensifying.
I got some Fentanyl shortly thereafter, but the nurse failed to tell me they will stop giving it to me after 300 mg. So at about 11:30 am when I requested more I couldn't have any and I was only dilated to about 2.5 cm. I was waiting until I dilated to 4-5 cm before getting an epi though. It only took until 1:30 pm for me to dilate to 4, but the contractions I was having made it feel much longer.
I had been hesitant about getting an epi, but now that I have had one I would do it again in a heartbeat. It took me 7 hours to dilate from 1 cm to 4 cm. After I got the epi it took only 2 hours to dilate from 4 cm to 10 cm and I slept for most of it. At 3:50 pm I was ready to start pushing. Pushing is exhausting, but it wasn't painful. I pushed for a little over 2 hours and delivered at 6:16 pm. I did end up having to get an episiotomy which is the most painful part of my whole birthing experience.
We were team green so finding out we had a little boy was super exciting! His name is Archer James and he weighed 6 lbs. 13 oz and was 19.5" long. He is jaundiced and had to spend a day in a bilibed, but then his levels went way down. Now we are working in a feeding/sleeping schedule and he is getting much better with bfing. I still need to pump though b/c he is still pretty tired due to the jaundice and feeding can be very trying.
GL to all of you who are still awaiting your LO. It is totally worth whatever it takes to get them here.
