Phentermine?

Let me give the disclaimer that I haven't done any research yet, I'm about to Google it.  But it was prescribed to me by my doctor today.  I mentioned that I was starting WW and she knows I have been struggling with my weight since having DS.  I initially lost all of my pregnancy weight, but then gained it all back.

She described this drug as safe and listed mild side effects like dry mouth, dry eyes, constipation, etc.

Does anyone take this?  I need to lose about 20ish pounds to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, and probably 30 to be at my ideal weight.  I didn't think that would really require drastic measures.  And frankly, the idea of taking what is basically a diet pill scares me.

ETA: She prescribed 1/2 a tablet per day.

That's exactly what I was thinking.  I think I need a new doctor.

Yes whew, i was hoping you would take that the right way.  FWIW, i lost 15 lbs. in about 3 months on WW and exercising 5 times a week.  and i'm not even talking hard work outs.

  • Yeah, I did WW after I had DS and lost about 25 pounds in 4 months fairly easily.  That's why I just don't see me needing a drug to do it again.  It's just that I haven't been trying at all so I gained it all back over the last year.

I think my doc is the type who thinks a pill can solve everything.

  • I swear to god Phentermine messed up my thyroid.  I never had an issue with it before I took Phentermine.  I know that's probably BS, but it seems like a crazy coincidence.

  • I wouldn't play with that stuff.  Especially over 20 pounds.  My doctor wouldn't prescribe that to me and I probably am 8,000 pounds overweight!

  • I really don't think there is any indication for you to be taking Phentermine. It is usually reserved for obese or morbidly obese patients, not somone who wants to lose 20 vanity lbs.

FWIW, I am over 100lbs overweight and have weight-related medical conditions, and my doctor is still hesitant to prescribe it for me. We discussed it, and she flat out said it can be a dangerous drug, and that she would only consider it if I couldn't get any weight off with diet and exercise, and only on a closely monitored and temporary basis.

I'm giving your doc serious side-eye for that.

  • Huummm!   I have taken it in the past and it really works great.  Most difficult side effect, it is very additive.

When you try to stop it may cause migraine type headaches and lack of energy.  If you take it, you need to know what to excect and have the determintation to stop it when it is too additive you shoud be fine.

Mine is a very unpopular opinion.

I'm sure you are on sort of an emotional roller coaster anyway. this will only make it worse.insomnia/addiction - when you take this drug, you'll be so amped up you'll be praying for sleep. if you do get to sleep, god forbid you wake up in the middle of the night. its like your body stores little doses of it and pumps some out as soon as your eyes open up. when i took it, i'd lay awake for hours. then the only way i could get through my day was to pop another pill.racing heart - its pretty dame scary. at times it was like my heart was going to jump right out of my chest. overall i probably lost about 50 of the 100lbs i needed to lose when i was taking it for 8 months. I gained 40lbs of that back within a year after i stopped taking the pills. I know that method of loss and quick re-gain were not good for my heart.my advice: just stick with WW. it will happen for you if you really want it. amphetamines are nothing to mess with, even if they are prescribed by a doctor. oh and get a new doctor. 20-30lbs is not a reason to prescribe a weight loss drug.
  • Yea. I am giving the side eye to your Dr. I lost 30 lbs with WW about 5 years ago and kept it off. I am still at the same weight now after a kidl.
