How would you pronounce our girls name???

It's Evangeline.  WOuld you pronounce it E-van-gel-een or E-van-gel-eye-n?

My mom swears everyone will call her Evan-gel-eye-n and I think it is quite well known that the correct pronounciation is E-van-gel-een.

What do you think??

This is why I could never live in the South.  Long E all the way.

  • E-van-gel-een is how I would pronounce it.  I wouldn't necessarily say that one pronunciation over the other is correct though.

This. Apparently I am in the minority, but I have only heard this name pronounced as "line" at the end. Also, for what its worth, Baby Names World lists both pronunciations as possibilities ...

    Pronunciation:

(ee VAN jeh line); (ee VAN jeh leen)

  • Een.  My cousin's daughter is Evangeline and she has never once gotten "eyen"

  • I would say -een, but you probably will run into people who say it -line (as in draw a line), or even -lyn.  I'd think -een is most common, though, and people will get it right after they hear you say it once.

Those words are part of the English language. Evangeline, as with most names, originates elsewhere. Just like Celine, Angeline, Sandrine, Sabine, Yasmeen, Jasmine... Not all names are pronounced phonetically.

Right, I was just being silly. But do you really pronounce "Caroline" Caroleen and Madeline Madeleen?

I can see how someone would pronounce it Evangeleen, I'm just shocked by how everyone seems to think the other pronunciation is "ignorant" or "never been used."

I'm from the north and EVERYONE I know with that name pronounces it E-van-gel-eye-n...just like caroline...could be a greek thing though

  • I have a friend with this name and she pronounces it exactly like you do. I think the pronunciation is obvious.
