Breastfeeding

Not experiencing "let down" but have milk?

When I BF, i can tell that milk is in supply because DD has quite a bit of it around her mouth when she pulls away and I can hear her swallowing.  However, at 11 days post partum, I have not experienced engorgement, noticeable breast fullness, or let down sensations.  I feed every 2-2.5 hours for about 30 mins at a time.  Has anyone else experienced, or not experienced, these "expected" sensations?  Could it be that my milk has not really come in?

  • I never really FELT my letdown either, and I had a strong one that made DS gag and choke sometimes - I just never really felt it unless I was super full and then it was just a bit tingly, never painful.

Sounds like you're doing fine! I'm not sure about the fullness though - mine felt like bowling balls for the first 6 weeks. Is she gaining weight ok?

  • We go back to the Doc's tomorrow so I'll check her weight then.  I just expected my breast to be huge right now.  They don't seem any different than before delivery and certainly don't feel "full" or "less full" before and after feedings.  Guess I'll just check with the doc tomorrow.  Wish this was easier!
  • I didn't feel a let down until I started "missing" feedings.  When DS started sleeping longer I would wake up and notice my boobs were hard.  Now that I'm back at work I will feel the tingly let down if I don't pump right on schedule and I get too full.  Even now that I really know what I'm looking for, I don't feel a let down when DS is nursing... I can sometimes hear it though - I can hear the milk literally shooting him in the top of his mouth or back of his throat.  As long as LO is gaining weight I'm sure you're fine :)
  • I really just started noticing the let-down feeling a few weeks ago.  And my breasts only feel full if it's been 4+ hours since DS has eaten.  Don't worry!
  • My breasts don't get hard except for in the morning, because DD doesnt eat as much at night.  If you are worried LO isnt getting enough, pump a little after feedings to clear out the breast for the next feeding.  I have never felt a letdown, even when I know I am having one during a feeding or pumping.

  • It was about a month pp before I was able to feel the let-down.
