Who has a crib against a wall (long end)?

If you do, do you lay DC down with his/her head at opposite ends of the crib, depending on which way you're holding him/her?  For example, the way we have Cal's crib, it is easiest to put him down when we are holding him with his head on the left.  If it's on the right we have to turn him around to face the "right way" and it's an awkward drop into the crib (and sometimes wakes him up).  DH thinks we should just lay him down whichever way his head is, even if it's the "wrong way."  I feel like if he wakes up facing the other direction it'll freak him out.  Plus, it just feels "wrong" to me with his head in the other direction!  DH did it this morning, though, and he didn't react at all.

Anyway, just curious what others do.

  • We always lay her facing the same way, even though I usually feed her with my other arm and have to turn her around in my arms when I lay her down.  She's so used to it now that it doesn't wake her up at all.

  • we always lay Griffin the same way (since he was a baby) but only b/c we had the head of his crib elevated for reflux.

otherwise- my pedi actually recommends changing which end you put their head- because babies tend to look towards the middle of a room- and end up getting flatter on the one side if they always look one direction while in bed.

  • I used to put DD whichever way her head was when I was holding her.  But just recently have begun trying to put her head on the same side, even though it is kind of awkard to turn her around.  I don't really know why I started, I guess I figured she should start getting used to being the same way every night.
  • interesting responses - thanks everyone.  i should say this has become more of an issue since we lowered the crib b/c it's a long drop and hard to do anyway, especially if we're trying to turn him at the same time.

Ditto this (although mine said babies look towards the door, to see you come in, I guess). We put him down whichever way we're holding him.

  • I'm right handed, DH is left handed - we put DS in the opposite direction all the time.

Plus, DS does NOT stay in one direction through the night.  I'll put him down one way, he'll be falling asleep.  I'll check on him an hour later, and he'll be in an entirely different part of the crib in a different direction.

So- I dont worry about freaking him out.

  • I ALWAYSSSSSSSSS  love your questions because you always open discussion for things I think about and think I over think too much!!!!!!!hahahahahha

Ok soooo feng shui(sp) always says feet toward the door because so you know whats comin!  I alllllllways feel bad when I put ds opposite way but when he is laid down awake he allllllways falls asleep "wrong" way....

So basically I have nooooo answer for you just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you!!!!!!!!!!

  • I lay him down whichever way is easiest.  He moves around so much that he doesnt notice which way he is facing and is usually in a different position by the time he wakes up anyway.  I dont think there is anything wrong with facing the wall.

  • I used to lay them always tried the same way, but now that they are older I don't really worry about it.  They have never woken up freaked out if they were the other way.
  • They move around so much it doesn't even matter.  When they shared a crib, I would lay them both across the matress, head by wall, body out and the slept side by side and never woke up from moving them around.

  • Jake's a lot younger, so I'm not even sure he notices at this point, but we switch it up.  I noticed very early on that he favors laying on the right side of his head and he has a slight flat spot now.  I thought by switching him he'd possibly start turning his head to the left more but he doesn't.  Now, I just lay him down whichever way I'm holding him.

well there you go, that must be why it feels weird to me!!  b/c the "right" way in his room IS with his feet toward the door!

  • I always lay her down facing the same way.  She almost always wakes up no matter which way she is facing "en route" but usually goes back to sleep within 5-10 minutes (but on occassion it can take up to an hour, but she always goes to sleep)

  • We usually end a feeding and read him a couple of books with his head laying on our right arm.  So, we normally put him in bed with his head facing the right.

  • We never lay them down the same way. Not on purpose.. just whichever way we're holding them. So.. both for sure. And all three of our cribs are the long way on the walls.
  • This is probably going to sound silly, but for right now, she's laying the short way in the crib.  She's swaddled and somehow has figured out how to scoot down the length of the crib so this acts as a "stopper".  When she's too big to go this way (which is coming soon) she'll go with her head to the right even if that's kind of awkward and backwards to how we lay her on the changing table.  If she goes the other way, the morning light will be more in her eyes even though we don't have any direct sun shining in that room.  With her head to the right, the light is blocked more by the wall.

  • I always put her in one direction--opposite the direction that I change her so that she's not always looking out on the same side.  However, since she can now roll, she moves a lot.  Sometimes she winds up on her belly and in the opposite direction from when I put her down on her back.  So at this point it's habit to put her down that way but that was my rationale when I started it.

  • Riley doesn't care which way his head faces. I have a tendancy to put his head to the right but many times he wakes up in the middle of the night and turns around. It doesn't bother him at all.
  • We switch it up, depending on what way we're holding him in the rocker when we sing to him. He flips onto his belly and starts scooting all over the crib the minute we lay him down, anyway.
