We had a dimmer installed.. and I'd say its a must.. The kind we have is really nice.. It looks like a light switch, but there is a little slider next to the switch that goes up and down to dim the light.. What we usually do when we put her to bed at night is put the dimmer all the way down with the switch off, so her room is dark when we go in, but enough light to see.. So then we turn that off but if we have to go in in the middle of the night we can just flip the switch and the light will turn on but super dim. Way better than the old circle dimmers like we have downstairs.

If you're getting the fan put in, get the dimmer with it. I don't think it's hard for someone that knows what they're doing. I wish we had separate switches for all of our ceiling fans. In ds's room, we have a lamp on his dresser (it's his changing table) that we switch on when we're getting him ready for bed instead of the overhead light.
We don't have dimmers, but when we stayed with my grandma's house during the summer she had one and it was really nice when Joseph was really little. I liked it better than having a night light.

We have this as well-couldn't live without it! Ours is wired separately from the ceiling fan. Our fan doesnt have a light with it so we just pull the chain to turn the fan on/off. Then the switch does the lights only. Its nice b/c I dim them while nursing her so she gets the clue that its nighttime. Love it!
Just make them separate switches. I have a fan/light in my office (future nursery). The light is one switch and the fan portion is the other. I'll switch the light switch to an dimmer switch when the time comes.
