It depends on your car and what type of accident you get into. It is recommended that you try the middle first as it will keep LO safe from side impact collisions. For some reason rear and front impact it's best to be on the side. Again though, they say to try the middle first. If you have a latch system on the sides and not in the middle, they say to use the latch on the sides. Also, I have a Beetle until the middle of next year and it would be unsafe for us to use the middle as it's only a 4 seater and not a 5. So LO will be in the rear passenger side for the time being.

I always heard that the middle is the best...and they even mentioned this at the childbirth class I went to yesterday. However....fastforward to today and hubby is installing my car seat...and what does the car owner's manual tell us? That we can NOT install it in the middle, so it looks like itll be in back of the passenger's seat for my car.
We don't have a manual for our car so we went with the standard advice of middle seat. But, then we realized that the middle seat is raised a bit and the base kept slipping off. We moved it to the passenger side because I wanted to be able to turn around and see baby if needed. The base also fit better on the side.
Later, we found out that on our car, side is best for infant carriers. and middle is best for convertable seats! The middle has latches, but only on top which is odd.

Depends on the car. Read your manual and see what it suggests. In general the middle is the safest because it puts your child further away from either side in case of a side impact accident.
