Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

DS won't do a #2 in the potty

DS pee-pees in the potty just fine, and even has a way of letting us know when he needs to go.  Poo-pooing is another story.  He does fine when at day care, but at home he'd rather be playing than invest the time in #2.  He even has the terrible habit of poo-pooing in the pull up almost as soon as we take him off the potty.

Any tips out there?  He's 22 months and changing messy pull-ups is not fun.

  • I don't have any experience but I've heard #2 sometimes can be scary for a LO to do on the potty. ?They have to make a little more effort to sit still longer and push. ?But I also heard once they start to get it it's smooth sailing. ?

    give him time?

I agree with this.  22 months is very young to be fully potty trained.  I would just keep encouraging it and I would guess within a few months, he'll be doing it just fine.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it yet.  He's still really young.  DD is also really gung-ho about peeing in the potty but won't poop in it at all.  She's still in diapers.  She can get them off herself fine to go pee so we don't have the poop in the pull-up to worry about.

  • He is very young to PT'd so it is great that he is going pee in the potty. As for the poop, it is an issue for a lot of kids. If you are full on PTing him, the first thing that you should do is get rid of the Pull Ups, they create a false sense of security. That is not to say that he won't poop in underwear, but he will be less likely to because poop in a Pull Up/Diaper feels a lot different than a poop in underwear.  I used the 3 day PTing method for my DD and put her in panties on the first day and never looked back (she only wore Pull Ups for naps and bedtime in the beginning). We had a rough couple of weeks of her holding her poop and flat out refusing to go, but eventually she got it (she was pee trained in 2 days). What worked for her was warm baths. The warm water helps to relax them so about half way through her bath I would put her on the potty and after just 2 days she started to poop on the potty. She got over her fear and never had an issue again. Good luck.
