2nd Trimester

Rash from Wedding Rings

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm new to the 2nd trimester board, and I wanted to ask if anyone has experienced a rash from their rings. I have a dry/itchy patch that has developed on my finger where my rings are. I had to take them off! Just curious... thanks!

Re: Rash from Wedding Rings

  • i haven't but have heard of women who become allergic to metal during pregnancy... or if the weather is dry it could be drying out your skin and your ring is rubbing

  • i have the same problem...I leave my ring off!  The doctor gave me an anti fungal cream, but it didn't help.
  • This happened to me when I was pregnant with my son. Take your rings off for a while and it will go away. People have told me its from water getting under them when you wash your hands. I don't know, when it happened to me I was pregnant with my son but it hasn't happened again yet. I was also swollen with my son, so the rings got tight, maybe that was my cue to remove them while I still could!

  • Whoa, dial back the sig pic.

To the OP, yep, I've been fighting with one the past few weeks.  I don't believe it is the wetness trapped after washing hands that PP mentioned, since it is only happening on one finger.  I wear rings on both ring fingers:  my engagement/wedding bands are platinum, my right hand ring is white gold.  I only have the rashy dry patch on my left ring finger.

  • I had that problem before I was pregnant. Turns out they just needed to be cleaned.

  • Yes, I had to remove my wedding rings yesterday.  I had dry skin below them it was beginning to peel.  After removing them, I can see that they were getting to tight on my finger and I am thankful I was able to remove them.  I am sure the rings were to tight to allow air flow to my underlying skin, which could had caused a problem.  This is my second pregnancy and it happened with my first pregnancy also. I am almost 18 weeks along right now.

My husband and I will be purchasing a simple band for me to wear during the remander of my pregnancy.

  • Yep, sorry, fixed it. Thanks!
  • Mine are platinum also, and have just recently been cleaned. My hands are dry.. so maybe i'll try to keep them off completely for a week or so, and moisturize more and see what happens.  Thanks!

  • I used to manage a jewelry store and this happens to alot of pregnant women.  Most likely it's the hormones giving you allergic reactions to the metal.  You can take your ring to a professional jeweler to have it buffed and cleaned but the problem will likely continue.  Sometimes it will go away shortly after you give birth.  For some women it continues the whole time they b/f too.  The best solution (I know it isn't ideal) is to remove your ring and keep them in a safe place until after you have your baby.
  • Happened to me too, I too my ring off for a week, my finger healed up so I started wearing my ring again and now the itchy dry patch is back!
  • I have some wide David Yurman rings, and they do that to my fingers.  When I wear white gold that's rhodium plated it doesn't happen.  I have to take them off and give them some time to breathe....but it comes back a few days after putting them on....but this was before I was pregnant. I wonder if I am allergic to sterling.
  • you could be allergic but I had the same issue and it turned out they needed to be cleaned really well. Lotion and stuff gets stuck inside them and can irritate the skin. since pregnany makes our skin sensitive, lots of people have this issue. Take dish soap and very hot water leave them in there overnight and them mext day clean with a toothbrush really good and place back in hot hot water for a few minutes to rinse off. Hope this helps.
  • same thing happened to me...my engagement and wedding bands are both platinum and are now collecting dust in my jewelry box after causing a very itchy rash on my ring finger every time I wear them for more than a few hours.
  • I was asking someone today about this and she told me it could be a fungus type thing (like athlete's foot) and suggested I get some athlete's foot cream.  I was, of course, going to check with the nurse to make sure that would be okay but if it is I figured it is worth a shot.

This. It's probably eczema. I hear many mom's get this after baby too from washing all the bottles. Take your rings off after you wash your hands and completely dry your fingers. It should keep it from getting worse. And try the plain Aveeno lotion with oatmeal. It has worked miracles for my eczema outbreaks in the past (way better than any prescription cream). GL!

  • Thanks everyone!
