Let's play doctor - what did I do to my foot?

So a few days ago my left foot started killing me out of the blue. It's not the whole foot but sort of the outer side of my foot (like from an inch or so below my pinky back to about an inch or so above my heel - but just the side of the foot not really the top or bottom). It doesn't hurt at all when I'm sitting or laying down, only when I put pressure on it while walking. It's not swollen or discolored and it's not tender to the touch either (other than when my full weight is on it). But it's painful enough when walking that I'm limping pretty considerably. It's not unbearable - I mean I did walk around the zoo in tennis shoes yesterday no problem but it's really not pleasant.

I can't think of anything that I did to injur it the other day. I did go for a walk with my ds in his stroller and I was only wearing sandals but that's been pretty normal for me for the last 4-5 months. And it felt fine after the walk. It was a good 2 hours or so afterwards that it started to hurt and I can't think of anything that happened between then that could have caused it. I have an doc appt on tuesday but it's my ob and it's not exactly her area of expertise Wink. I really keep hoping it's just going to go away because I don't want to have to go to my regular doc over a sore foot.

Any ideas ladies?

Re: Let's play doctor - what did I do to my foot?

  • Last week my husband started having foot pains just like yours.  We went to a really shady doctor-long story... but he was super ultra creepy and we won't be returning.  He took one look at my husband and said

    "you have gout!"

Seriously?  I think not!  He's been trying to stay off it as much as possible along with ice and elevation.  He said it has started to feel better.

I hope yours starts to feel better!

FWIW, I think he either sprained the side of his foot or even got a small stress fracture from work.  He did a 6 mile ruck march two days before it started hurting.

  • LOL at the gout comment. My mom has gout and there's definitely a lot more to it then a bit of pain on the side of your foot! Gout causes constant searing pain - so much so that even the bed sheets make her foot hurt when it's acting up.

I kind of want to hear this shady doctor story now!

  • Ummm...my official diagnosis is that you have The Weird.

Totally not helpful, but it sounds like it could be sprain, strain, bruising that you can't see yet...you get the idea.

I guess I'm not clear on how much it actually hurts you, or when. Have you tried staying off it (not easy with an active kid, I'm sure!) or ice or any sort of pain reliever?

Honestly, Tuesday is a long time to wait if you're limping. If you continue to favor one side, you run the risk of throwing out or off your knees, hips, and/or back, none of which are pleasant. Can you call your GP to see what s/he thinks, and possibly get in if s/he wants to see you?

  • What type of pain is it?  Tingling pain, searing pain, dull aching pain?

Is it on the side of your foot, on the top, the bottom?

Does the pain feel limited to the foot, or does it sort of travel up the leg?

What have you done to treat it?

    Talk to me, sistah.

  • What type of pain is it?  Tingling pain, searing pain, dull aching pain? Shooting aching pain (but only when weight is on it, otherwise no pain)

Is it on the side of your foot, on the top, the bottom? side - left side of my left foot. Starts maybe an inch below my little toe and down the side of my foot. No pain really on the top or bottom of the foot)

Does the pain feel limited to the foot, or does it sort of travel up the leg?  Now that I'm really thinking about it - it does seem to slightly affect my ankle a bit - like the bony protruding part of my ankle seems a touch stiff and sore. But I don't know if that has to do with my limping and messing with my ankle now too or if it was always like that.

What have you done to treat it? ummm nothing. Since it doesn't hurt when I'm off it, I haven't been icing it or anything. I try to stay off it but haven't really done very well with that - note the trip to the zoo yesterday.

  • Does it feel better or worse in different shoes?

Does it feel better or worse in different shoes?

It seems to be better in my tennis shoes. I haven't worn my sandles (total foam flip flops) since and only my tennis shoes when I go out. I'm barefoot around the house and I think it feels a bit better in the shoes (which is why I was able to bop around the zoo all day yesterday probably making it worse Wink) I suppose since that's the case I should wear them around the house too but I just can't make myself do that!

Just tried and not really =) It feels a tiny tiny bit twingy when I wiggle it about but not anything I would describe as pain. I think if I wasn't looking for it I wouldn't have noticed it.
