WTF - my experienced donor failed her screening!

The egg donor we thought we would be starting to cycle with any day now, just tested positive for Fragile X in her genetic screening so my clinic won't accept her (I completely understand why).  She has donated 3 other times at 2 different clinics so the agency is now having to call the other intended parents (2 of which resulted in pregnancy) to tell them of this news.

On the up side, I am glad I found out now.  Although I am not really taking any peace in that right now.

I was just starting to get hopeful about cycling again.  DH and I just can't seem to catch a break.  Sad

  • Thanks ladies.  I am in a complete state of shock right now.

Fragile X causes mental retardation and gets worse down the generational line.

ETA:  I do feel horrible for the other families and the donor.  Hopefully, everything is fine with the children and now they know about the issue going forward for when they TTC.

Yes, we have to start over with finding a new donor.  This is the second donor we lost and we are 6 months into earnestly deciding to pursue DE.

We have also now lost about $6,000 between attorney's for both donors and this donor's screening costs.

  • Holy. CRAP.  That SUUUUUUCKS!!!!  And yowza - I can't believe no one tested her before for that!  Jeebus!

I'm so sorry BRS - that's just totally crummy.  I wish I could fast forward you to the "good" part Sad

ETA: Have you thought about switching to a clinic with an in house donor pool?  I don't know how convenient it would be for you, but it seems to me that relying on agencies can get really dicey.  I'm totally biased because I had a GREAT experience with our clinic and there was no screening involved - all in house donors were screened and ready to go... Like I said I have no idea if that's even an option and I'm sure you chose the best clinic for you. (((HUGS)))

E - unfortunately, the clinics in Massachusetts don't have in-house donor pools.  So I would have to cycle out of state which I think would be more of a hassle.  Using an agency also allows us to get current and childhood pictures, etc.  I have to say the agency has been pretty good throughout this process.  We have only paid one agency fee and we don't have to pay another until we actually get an ER out of the deal.  So at least we haven't paid that more than once.  The attorney's cost about $1100 each time (combined for ours and theirs) we negotiate with a donor and the screening fees are paid to the clinic.

My agency is suggesting another donor who just donated with our clinic in September that she thinks might work for us.  At least we know for sure she passed the screening.  We would have to repeat the FDA tests that are required during the cycle but it would cut the screening fees in half.

For her cycle at my clinic she had 12 eggs, 8 fertilized, the transferred 2 high implant potential 3 day embryos and froze 4 on day 3.  The woman just had her beta and it was in the high 300's.  Although she doesn't make a lot of eggs, it looks like they are good quality.

I wish that ASRM had a minimum testing requirement so that all clinics tested for the same things...

I see.  I don't mean to come down on all agencies - I know there are great ones out there.  It sounds like yours is looking out for as best they can.  Fingers crossed that third time is the charm!!!

  • Ahhhh! I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this. I can't believe it wasn't caught before that she has Fragile X. I'm sure it's disappointing for her too because it could have a lot of implications for her future. And the parents who are already expecting now have a whole new set of fears to deal with especially if they're having a boy. That situation sucks for everyone!

I know what it feels like to be in that place where you think you just can't win. I hope you find a new SUPER donor soon!

  • Oh, honey, I'm so sorry!!!
  • I'm so sorry to hear this news - but like you said better to find this info out now then when you are pregnant!  Hang in there - I know it is so tough - losing donors is so hard particularly when you start to sort of bond with their profiles.  Hopefully this next donor will be the one - my third donor was the one for me!
