CDs and diaper rash, need your advice..

Recently I've noticed some diaper rash on DD. I think it is because she is sleeping longer at night and I haven't been changing her diaper then (sometimes she goes 10 hours without a diaper change- I do dreamfeed her once during that time, but I haven't been waking her up for a diaper change). What should I do? Do you change your LO's diaper in the middle of the night to prevent this? Or can I get diapers that are more absorbent or something? Right now I'm doing Thirsties covers and prefolds, with an extra night time doubler, but sometimes she does leak through all that still..

During the day I change her at least every 2-3 hours, or right away whenever I hear her go. Does that seem about right or should I be changing her more often then too?

We went to her two month checkup yesterday and the pedi said she has a labial adhesion, which she said isn't a big deal and can be easily treated, but I read online that one cause can be infrequent diaper changes and I'm feeling terrible that I may have caused it.. :(

  • I would change her every 2 hours, not waiting past that regularly.  At night, it sounds like you need a different solution if she's leaking through.  We like sunseedlings fitteds (she has overnight solutions on her website).  If you're worried about her being wet (as they will be with prefolds, it doesn't wick moisture), try fleece liners.

I'm sure that your actions did not cause the labial adhesion, don't feel bad - you're doing all you can for her and no one can ask for anything more!

  • I would agree with PP, I think you need a different nightime diaper.  We use a Sandy's diaper with an insert and then a hemp doubler for our LO who sleeps 12 hours at night.  When LO started STTN (8 hours +) we started to use California Baby diaper rash cream as a preventative only at night.  CA Baby (Target sells it) is CD friendly so we never have had an issue.

  • Sounds like your DD needs a more absorbent nighttime diaper. I use PFs with AFFF hemp inserts and a fleece liner with a wool cover. Using a wool cover overnight helps their bums breathe better than the Thirsties and also absorbs a little so they don't leak. Try the fleece liners for stay dry for her though, that helps DD sleep through the night and she goes for about 12 hours a night.
  • Agree with PP that it's time for a new night-time diaper. We started using BG Organic OS AIO for overnight at two months, now with a hemp doubler. Fleece liners (just a piece of thin fleece) really helps keep the bum dry. We're also not shy with the Desitin at first sight of a rash (with a liner). DD has sensitive skin, and I think using water-only on a washcloth instead of packaged wipes and daily diaper-free time really helps.

Your changing routine sounds like ours. BTW, we used to never change DD's diaper at night, which meant ~12 hours in the diaper. But b/c she recently changed her sleep/eating schedule, I started feeding her right before going to bed. Since I was rousing her anyway, I started also putting her nighttime diaper on then, and noticed an improvement on her butt. I keep the lights low and move slowly; she barely wakes and easily falls asleep again after eating.

Don't beat yourself up - these things happen. You're taking good care of your LO.
