What our Little Ones really think of CIO

My 5 yr old DD came home from kindergarten today and as usual I asked her how her day was and the things she did, if she had fun and whatnot.  Then she proceeded to tell me about a new friend she made who also had a little baby brother just like she did.  She told me her friend asked her if her mommy (me) loves her baby brother (my DS) all the time.  My DD said yes and explained to her the things I do with her little brother everyday, of course in that cute child conversation way.  And then DD asked her the same question and she said, "Yes, my mommy loves my little brother, too but not when it's bedtime because she locks him in his bedroom and I hear him cry until he falls asleep..."

So the little girl thinks her mom doesn't love her baby brother when it's bedtime which prompted me to believe that the mother does CIO.  Makes me sad that the little girl thinks the love stops at bedtime.

Sad

  • That is really sad all the way around.

  • maybe the little girl doesn't know that mommy is in the room with her baby brother and he is just not able to be soothed. (*remembering nights when DD cried 3 hours straight not matter WHAT I did)

Good point! I wonder if she has mentioned it to her mom or asked about it.

  • regardless: definitely puting this in my back pocket as something I'll need to explain to DD when #2 comes along! "We love your brother, but sometimes babies cry! You cried too!"
  • I think that verdict contains a lot of assumptions based on a five year old conversation lol but w/e

It's the fact that that is how a 5 yr old sees it through her eyes...which makes it sad.

  • I was just on a trip to IN this past weekend and my 4 year old niece asked if my DH was going with me.  I said no, and my niece said good...because she didn't like how DS cried when DH was with him.  She said DH was always teasing him.

I had to explain to her that DH was trying to cheer DS up, not trying to make him cry. lol  She didn't realize babies cried like that.
