Question about feeding new born from bottle

I am pumping my breast milk into a bottle for my newborn to feed. We tried the breast feeding thing and just didn't work out. so I got a medela and pump about every three hours. I notice when I give my DD a bottle about half way into it, she almost always gets some milk down the "wrong throat" and starts coughing. It is so scarey....Could it be the nipples? Anything I can do to help the situation or is it a learn as you go for your baby? Thanks!

Re: Question about feeding new born from bottle

  • this is normal. try a slower flow nipple. if you're already on the slowest flow, take the nipple out of the baby's mouth a couple of times during the feed so they can swallow properly and catch their breath a bit.

  • DD gets ahead of herself sometimes and chokes.. both at the breast and with bottles. Just use the slowest flow nipple and give baby quick breaks throughout the feed.

We started with Avent bottles and those were clearly way too fast for DD.. she was choking and gagging constantly. We switched to Playtex VentAire Wide and she's done much better!

If it happens a lot, you may want to consider trying a different bottle with slower flow.

  • It happens with BF too... sometimes she jut drinks too fast!  Ditto pp's, try a slower flow nipple, put her a bit more upright, and be glad she as the ability to clear it when it goes down the "wrong pipe!"

this. my LO gets excited and drinks super fast sometimes, so i need to stop her so she can catch her breath every now and then.
