Trying to Get Pregnant

anybody here allergic to antibiotics?

I'm not actually allergic but I usually get nasty YIs from taking them.  What do you take if you can't take antibiotics?

Re: anybody here allergic to antibiotics?

  • I'm allergic to cyclines (Doxycycline, etc.) & Penicillin.  I take Zithromax or Cipro if I need an antibiotic.

  • The only one to date that has caused me a YI is augmentin. I hate that stuff!

Otherwise, I tolerate antibiotics pretty good, minus the expected nausea.

  • I've been told to eat lots of yogurt when taking anti-biotics.  (Well, like, a few hours afterwards.)  Don't know if that actually helps though, but it makes sense.  Have you tried this?

To answer the question, though, I'm only allergic to certain antibiotics.

  • thanks. it's usually penicillin or amoxycillin that gets prescribed and causes problems.  I tried picking up a probiotic tonight but I'm kinda nervous about taking it for some reason.

  • Nope but DH is allergic to Penicillin. He just takes another antibiotic in its place. I get YI's from any antibiotic but I get pills from the Dr. for it.
  • Yogurt is helpful with diarrhea caused by antibiotics, but I'm not sure if they actually "travel" to the vagina to help reestablish normal flora there.  I would ask your MD what they recommend.
  • thanks everyone, I didn't realize how many different antibiotics there are out there (google is my friend lol)

I found some Levaquin in my medicine cabinet, maybe I'll try that.

Haha, maybe you should ask your doc before taking it.  Different antibiotics are generally used to treat different things. :)  Unless it was prescribed to you previously for the same issue you're having now.  But still ask first. :) Hope you feel better.  And yes, there are tons of antibiotics.

Sorry, the medical professional in me is coming out!  I really would NOT take any antibiotics unless instructed to do so by your MD.  They could be expired or could interact with other meds you are on.

  • I'm allergic to penicilin.
  • alright, alright, it was a dumba$$ idea. I just feel like absolute shiit and I'm between drs and feeling pretty desperate.  thanks for convincing me otherwise.

If you are sick and you truly need an antibiotic you need to go to the doctor to get the correct kind for the sickness. If you are finding something in your cabinent then it isn't probably a full course let alone the correct one for your sickness. If you only take part of a course of antibiotic or the wrong one it will come back with a vengence the second time, hence the running rampant of MRSA because of misdiagnosed or antibiotics given too much. Go see your doc asap and feel better soon!

  • Also when you go to the doc just ask for a Diflucan (1 dose oral YI treatment) and you can take it with the antibiotic so you won't get one.
  • Don't take anything without going to a doctor.  If you're in between docs go to a walk in clinic so you don't end up with a bad reaction.  I knew I was allergic to penicillin so I requested something else when I got sick years ago.  They gave me doxycycline & I ended up with hives.  Don't chance it; you never know what your reaction might be.

  • I am allergic to the cyclines and penicillin.  I usually take cipro.  When I am prescribed antibiotics, I eat a lot of yogurt and take a probiotic supplement to replenish the good bacteria that take care of yeast infections.

  • I am allergic to certain antibiotics, but others work well for me. As for the YI, I used to be prone to them (got them every month before AF - sorry if tmi, but you asked! lol).

My dr. said to start eating yogurts often. That was 6 or 7 years ago, and since I've made yogurt a staple of my diet and I've only had one yi in all that time!
