Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Ugh. This kid just won't eat!

After nearly 2 months of being on solids, DD is still not interested.  She won't open her mouth for anything.  I've tried different foods, trying to make it fun, not making a big deal/forcing her...but I'm frustrated.  I know I shouldn't stress about it, but I want her to eat SOMETHING.  I'm lucky to get 5-8 spoonfuls into her at a sitting.  She nurses okay, but she's only in the 5th percentile.  I was the same way as a baby (small and refused to eat) and I know her size is mostly genetic.  I feel bad when I go to the pedi & they express concerns about her weight & tell me I have to make her eat.  Short of holding her down & force feeding her, I'm at a loss.  Suggestions?

  • Loading the player...
  • we are currently in feeding therapy bc ds has a lot of feeding issues stemming from reflux... aside from the technical stuff, the main thing is to keep feedings as low stress as possible. they have to want to eat.  so keep trying new foods and don't stress (easier said than done) when she doesn't want to eat. Just take her cues, the first time she gives them, and back off.  Eventually she'll eat.  Let her be in control.  As long as she's getting enough BM then you have no need to worry right now.  The more you try to push her, the more she will resist. Good luck. It will get better, I promise.

  • I am having the same problem here.  She's gaining ok but not eating much at all.  I'm sure she's gaining just because of the formula.  I second the finger foods.  Good Luck!  I hope things get better for you!
  • imagencbelle:
Have you tried letting her feed herself finger foods?
i was going to suggest this also.  ds loves the spoon to chew on but is not a fan of baby mush so far.  when i gave him a chunk of melon, though, he couldnt get enough of it.  or try one of those mesh feeders?
  • I agree with the other posters....  I'd try to let her feed herself.  Some babies just will not have anything to do with the baby food.  Try not to stress, she will be ok!
  • We've done some finger foods; I'll keep trying.  She loves the mesh feeders for frozen fruit cubes.  Maybe I'll serve all her meals in them!  LOL

    Thanks ladies.
