Babies: 9 - 12 Months

NE1's LO "Allergic" to OATMEAL? Gets Face Rash?

I tried oatmeal at 5 months and now again at 7 months and LO gets a rash around her mouth right away.  She doesn't with barley or wheat cereal.  It's weird.  I thought it was a "gluten" thing -- but it's not since she doesn't react to barley or wheat.

  • Not oatmeal but my dd used to get a rash around her eye from apples and peaches.  She stopped getting it with apples around 7 months and peaches closer to 8 months.

stupid question - is it just plain oatmeal?

Yes, plain single-grain baby oatmeal (Gerber).

  • My little guy does the same thing.  Plain oatmeal by Gerber nothing added but water.

The baby oatmeal is fortified with other things.  The synthetic vitamins and minerals may be what the reaction is from.

The best way to tell if it is an actual oat allergy is to boy some organic oats, soak them overnight (because your LO could be reacting to the phytates), and give them to her plain the next morning.

I wrote about why it is important to soak your oats in my blog here.

Thanks for the insight.  But, she doesn't react to Gerber's Rice and Barley -- which contain the same fortified vitamins/minerals. Hmmm.
