1st Trimester

Confused of when 2nd Trimester really begins...

I am counting down the days until I can tell everyone about my pregnancy.  I have conflicting information from the baby books of when your 2nd trimester begins.

Is it Week 12 or Week 14?

I know you're chances of MC go down dramatically after a certain week and I was confused at when most women tell everyone.

Thanks!

  • I waited until 14 weeks before telling people.  I think per the bump it's 13w3d.

  • I believe the chance of m/c goes down dramatically at 14 weeks.  Most people use the 13w 3d point to switch over to 2nd tri.  Thats what I am using.

  • I am going with the 2nd trimester starting at 13w3d because if you take 40 wks and divide by 3 that is what you get. I plan on starting to tell people the 13th week.

  • my midwife separates the trimesters based on developmental stages, but I do it based on dividing the 40 weeks by 3 :)

  • The chance of m/c actually goes down drastically at 10w b/c that's the end of the embryonic period.  Going into 11 weeks, the baby is "breathing", living more off the placenta, and the organs are more developed.  The risk obviously continues to decline the further along you go, but if you've seen a heartbeat and had good ultrasounds and such and make it to 10 or 11 weeks, you're in really good shape statistically.

I'm counting 12 weeks b/c I'm carrying twins, which on average deliver at 36 weeks.  :P  That said, I think for purposes of telling people, 12 weeks really is considered pretty acceptable.  13 weeks if you really want to get through 1/3 of your pregnancy based on a 40-week gestation.

The long and short of it, it's up to you when you want to tell!

  • Most say around 13 weeks, the bump is 13 weeks 3 days, some books round up to 14 weeks. personally I say 13 weeks as does my midwifes office which is the one I care most about!
  • Technically, you are a 1/3 done with your pregnancy at 13w3d.  I have always considered 13 weeks the end of 1st trimester.  As far as telling family - we wanted to wait until the end of the 1st trimester with my son.  We had a doctor's appt at 13w5d and I just waited until we heard the hb and knew everything was ok before we told.  Do you have an appt coming up soon?  If not, your risk of a m/c between 12 and 14 weeks stays pretty much the same (my doctor said with a good hb after 10 weeks it falls to 1% where it stays for the rest of your pregnancy).
