motion sickness as a car passanger?

My husband has always been what I call a jerky driver in that he kicks up the horsepower when starting/merging.etc. Well it has NEVER bothered me in terms of nausia before, but now if I am the passanger with him OR anyone else I feel a little motion sick. Anyone else?

Re: motion sickness as a car passanger?

  • I get sick every time I get in the car now. literally.

The only thing that helps is phenergan about 30 mins before I get in the car (but I wouldn't recommend driving on it, it makes you a little sleepy).

  • yeah I get motion sickness a lot more often now. ?My husband does the same thing when merging and I look in the mirror to see why he steps on the gas like that and there are no cars to be found. ?It drives me nuts! lol

  • i have this horrible image in my head of LO being whipped around side to side and to the back when DH is driving. Like LO's whipped around is churning my stomach. :(

  • I have always had terrible motion sickness, but before I was pregnant I was able to be a passenger for up to an hour without getting sick (as long as I was in the front seat).  Now I have to drive everywhere, because being a passenger for even 5 minutes makes me ill.  It sucks, but my OB said Dramamine was fine to take, so if I absolutely have to be a passenger I make sure to take that an hour before we leave.  It helps tremendously.  GL!

  • yeah my dh too, he is a very aggresive driver and the quick turns, and hard accelerations make me a bit dizzy

  • We just got home from a trip to the carribean, and hit some moderate turbulance on the way home. Normally, it does not bother me at all. This time was a TOTALLY different story! Needless to say I reached a new low by throwing up in an airplane bathroom. YUCK...though it was better than one of those little white bags. So a big YES to my motion sickness getting way worse!!!
  • My DH does that too. I have found that it is worse in his Mazda 3 than it is in my Honda accord. It's almost like the car has something to do with it also, because he used to drive a Ford tarus (sp?) and a Ford explorer and I never really noticed it unless the road was hilly or curvy, but now that hes got the Mazda it is just awful. Finally one day I just flat out told him (before pregnancy) that his driving in this car was making me sick. I essentially blamed it on the car. Now he is much more careful how he pulls out and stops and such.

I have found that rolling down the window will help, getting some fresh air into the car.

  • I get this too... it's frustrating cuz I usually love to just relax in the car while DH drives.  Not anymore, I have to drive, even if it's just a couple blocks

  • I've only throw up twice for this entire pregnancy, and both times it has been in a car.  So I feel your pain!  It helps if I drive, and to keep saltine crackers around.  Hope you feel better!
  • Yes, and this is why I drive 99% of the time when I'm in the car with DH.  If I were in labor, I'd drive to the hospital rather than have him drive.
  • Yup, definitely... especially if I'm sitting in the backseat.  My DH isn't a super jerky driver, but enough that I've started to get more nauseous when he drives.  I definitely drive most of the time now!!
