3 mo olds- how often are they smiling?

my little guy smiles easily and a lot-  but sometimes he is hard to get a smile out of and a lot of the day he is staring and checking everything out and looks so serious

ETA: how much unprompted smiling?  he always is smiling when interacting unless hes exhausted

  • Unless she's really crabby or upset my DD almost always smiles back when I smile at her or play with her.  She also smiles randomly a few times a day

  • DS smiles all the time.  He's a very happy silly guy.

  • All the time. I can look at him serious and he gets the joke it seems and smiles back...

  • My little guy smiles all the time... unless he is somewhere new, or see someone he doesn't know.  Then he is way serious.  Like he needs to take it all in, and then he will think about smiling at you.  Oh and he doesn't smile at everyone either.  My DH is a kinda serious guy, and this is so far how our LO is... very thoughtful!
  • Not a lot.  She just started smiling earlier this month.  She's preemie so she's a little behind.  She will smile unprompted daily, but not all the time.  It takes a little bit for us to get her to smile, but she will.  She will also randomly smile at her image in the swing, toys hanging from her play mat and things like that.  It's not 24/7 though.

this makes me feel so much better-  our trip to the grocery store and lack of smile for the casheir is what prompted this post

  • He almost always smiles back at us if we smile at him, and sometimes unprompted. I offer him this ball that he likes (it's red, orange, and yellow, his favorite bright colors) and if he successfully takes it from me, he smiles this really cute little shy grin, like "aha! I did it!". He gets very pleased with himself when he masters little things like that.

But most often with strangers or strange places, he's pretty serious. It looks like he's scanning people's faces, and I like to say he's processing them into his databank.
