Question if you pump...

As of the last couple days I've switched LO from breatmilk to formula and have noticed a big improvement in her temperament and mood - much more content and slept well last night.

I've been pumping to keep up my supply and have a manual pump because I wasn't planning on pumping for long but I'm starting to think that maybe I should and mix the bm with the formula so she'll have both.

Anyway, my question is - if you have an electric pump - how long does it take for you to pump? and how many oz do you get?  is it hard to clean?

Re: Question if you pump...

  • I have the Lansinoh double electric pump. It just takes a few seconds to clean the flanges and parts.

I pump, and depending on the time of day, or how much I'd had in fluids prior to the pump, I can get anywhere from 3-5 ozs combined from both breasts. Granted, I am not eating and drinking as much as I should, it's hard to find the time with twins, but for me that's a good amount. It takes about 15 minutes for a good pump session.

  • I plan to quit when DD turns 6 months, so I'm starting to tapper off now, but when I was pumping 5/6 times per day I was getting around 3-4 oz per pump (maybe 5 oz if I was lucky, but that was rare).  The only exception to that was the first pump of the day - in the morning I normally got around 6-7oz.
  • I pump for 10 mins, get anywhere from 3-5 oz each time.  I have the Medela PISA and love it!  Not hard to clean & sterilize at all.

  • Oh, and I normally pump for 12-17 minutes.  If I'm getting more then I keep going, but if not I stop somewhere around the 15 minute mark.
  • i only pump once maybe twice a day... i pump for about 10 minutes and get 5-6 oz total but i don't pump til the milk stops/after the last drop.. i stop at 10 minutes.

super easy to clean. i rinse in hot water than use a microwave steamer bag.

  • It takes about 10-15 min to pump each time.  I get about 4-5 oz each time, and I pump 4x per day (After DS eats in the morning, 10am, 2am and 9-10pm.)  What I get varies on the time of day, and everyone is different.  It's not fun to clean, but I'm willing to do it to feed my baby BM while he's at daycare!  But no, it's not hard to clean.

  • I pump for about 15 minutes and get about 8-10 oz. It's an Ameda elite we rented, and I have 2 kits and a Pump Ease so it goes quickly and I only have to clean the flange, diaphram, valve and bottle.

  • Thanks ladies!

With the manual, I get a good amount but I can't keep going too long - my hand hurts! haha

  • I have the Medela and I pump every 3 hours and only for 10 minutes. I usually get about 8oz combined each pump. I only pump and do not nurse. Very easy to clean!!!
  • I pump maybe once a day and I usually get about 3oz from each breast and I usually pump for about 15 minutes.

  • I have the Playtex Embrace and pump 5-6 times per day.  (I exclusively pump.)  I pump about 15-20 min each time and get anywhere from 4 to 8 oz depending on what time of the day it is.  In total I get about 24 - 26 oz per day.  VERY easy to clean the parts.  Just pop them in the top rack of the dishwasher.
  • I have a Medela Pump In Style...it takes me about 7-10 minutes to empty my breasts - I only get about 1.5 oz total but I have SEVERE supply issues...I think "normal" people get like 3-5 times that much in the same amount of time. Not hard to clean, we just clean the parts in the dishwasher on the sanitize setting with the bottles, or if I'm using it more than once a day (I only pump when we're out and I don't want to BF in public, so I pump quick in the car since it's faster than BFing), I use the sanitizing wipes from Medela that just take a minute.
