gall bladder issues, anyone?

I just got released from the hospital and they *think* this is what's wrong with me.  It started on Wednesday afternoon and my stomach is still a little woozy (although they did pump me up with fluids and pain/nausea meds).  Did you have any gall bladder issues, either during or after pregnancy?  What was it like and what advice would you give someone who's been diagnosed with a sensitive gall bladder?  I am already trying to steer clear of the fatty, fried stuff, but any other info would be great.  Thank you!

Re: gall bladder issues, anyone?

  • On no you poor thing! I had an attack before I was ever pregnant. I ended up in the ER because I thought I was having a heart attack. I had a sonogram done, and I had no stones, so they didnt need to remove it. I didnt have one for almost 4 years, but then I had anther a few weeks ago. It wasnt as bad as the first one.

Things that help me: no fried/greasy things on an emmpty stomach. Small meals through out the day instead of a big meal at the end of the day. The worst thing to do is go all day without eating, and then eat a big greasy meal. Other than that, its a crap shoot really. You may never get another attack again....

  • My gall bladder issues started when I was pregnant with R, but it wasn't diagnosed until after she was born.

I remember feeling like the pain was worse than labor.  When I had attacks, I just couldn't stay still.

Really, the only think that helped was what you already mentioned: watching the fat in my diet.  They were able to diagnose with an ultrasound, then scheduled surgery.

My surgery was really easy, I was in the hospital for a total of 4-5 hours (including the prep, surgery and recovery).  I was a little sore for a couple of days, but was back to my normal routine within a week.  Good luck!

  • I had an attack years ago but they picked up after my dd was born. I wound up in the ER twice for it, found out I had stones. TMI...When they removed it, it was inflamed and filled with water, yuck! I've never been one to eat fatty/fried foods so go figure. Worst pain ever though. Feel better. I am so glad I had mine out.
  • I developed gall stones during pregnancy.  11 days after she was born, the attacks hit again and they scheduled it to be removed.  I was hoping I could control it with diet (all the suggestions the pp's have mentioned.)  But it was too frequent and painful.

My biggest piece of advice is to turn down an ERCP if they offer it before you have a gall bladder removed.  It's a scope procedure to see if there are stones in the common bile duct.  I got pancreatitis as a result of that procedure, and spent 14 days in the hospital before they could remove my gallbladder.  I was VERY sick.  No food or water at all for the entire time, and I was on a dilaudid button I could push every 6 minutes.  I don't even remember the first several days,  and my DD was only two weeks old.  It was horrible.  But once I healed enough to have the gall bladder removed, that surgery was pretty easy.

    Since then, no problems whatsoever!

  • I was 17 weeks pregnant with DD when I had an attack. ?I had it removed the next day. ?Since then, I unfortunately still have issues, even though I stay away from fatty foods. ?It sucks now but better than having the horrible pains from the attack.
    Good luck!
