3rd Trimester

Low Amniotic Fluid

I had an ultrsound yesterday at a place that does 3D, it wasn't ordered by my doctor... it was just for fun because I really wanted to know the sex and we weren't able to find out in any of our other u/s'. The thing that worries me is that there wasn't enough amniotic fluid to take an pictures, especially 3D ones. I am wondering if any one has had problems with low amniotic fluid? I am going to call my doctor and ask about it, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen or knows if its possible to increase amniotic fluid at this point? TIA

Re: Low Amniotic Fluid

  • Fluid levels can fluctuate, but please call your doctor today.  I have had low fluid with both previous pregnancies and it is absolutely nothing to mess with.  It does make a difference just how low it is.  I'm guessing a place like that they probably aren't trained to do measurements (but I could be wrong) but if it's low enough you couldn't get pictures, call asap.  With DD mine was really low, just a little above dangerous, and we were still able to get 3D pictures.  It fluctuated a little, but please do not wait to call.  See if they can get you in for an ultrasound today to measure fluid levels and check on the baby, and keep track of movement.

  • That is a big problem with those elective 3D ultrasounds.  It is not performed by your Dr. and therefore they cannot diagnose anything.  There is no way to increase your amniotic fluid, but I honestly wouldn't worry until you talk with/see your Dr., which I recommend doing.
  • i would call your dr. ASAP!  the private 3d ultrasounds are not for diagnostic purposes (in fact, we had to sign a waiver when we got ours) but i would be highly concerned with what they told you and would want to talk to my ob and possibly get a diagnostic ultrasound to check everything out.

  • mine was on the low end of normal at 8.9 and with a repeat u/s (after drinking like crazy for a couple of days) it was 10.1 so it is possible to increase it.

  • I was diagnosed with low amniotic fluid but with a Bio Physical Profile ultrasound, not an elective ultrasound.  My only concern is that one of those elective ones may not have qualified people to diagnose something like that.

Definitely call your OB and discuss what happened with them.  In the mean time keep track of movement of the baby and drink plenty of fluids, at least 80oz a day.

Either way I wouldn't get too worried about it until you actually speak with your OB.  Even if it turns out that they were correct and your fluid is low your OB will just keep track of it and make a qualified decision based on a few tests.

    Good luck.  Smile
