Awhile back I posted about CD trials and said I'd update after we got to use them. We decided on Jillian's Drawers because it could be ordered ahead of the due date and we'd be ready to go when he was born. Of course, since he was 5 weeks early and only 4 lbs 13 oz, we had to wait a bit. He is still long and lean, so things may fit him differently than what would work for you.
First off, the trial arrived really quickly and there are easy instructions for prepping them. And although CDs were a little intimidating at first, that didn't last long. They are fun to use and washing is not a big deal at all! We actually had more problems with disposables sticking to him when he had some big poops. We have had some leaks with the CD, but it is random and more due to user error than the dipe.
So here goes...
prefolds--a couple came in the trial and I purchased a bunch to use until we decided what we'd do long term. Totally intimidating at first. Not a big deal within a couple of days, but it has been harder for DH, grandmas, etc. We usually just fold in thirds and skip the snappi. During the day we use prefolds and covers.
covers--there was a thirsties cover as part of the trial and I had also picked up a prorap and bummis super whisper wrap. Thirsties are definitely our fave. They fit really well, especially around the leg, and have proven their ability to contain a mess.
fitted--there is a thirsties fab fitted and kissaluvs. We prefer the thirsties. They just fit him really well. The kissaluvs gets absolutely drenched. It isn't a problem, but just seems different than the rest of the diapers.
pockets--we like both the thirsties and the bum genius one size. We have decided to go with pockets long term for a few reasons. One is that day care will do cloth, but want a one step process. The other is that while I'm changing a lot of diapers and can switch from one style to another easily, DH and grandparents get confused by various combinations and when to use cover vs not.
aio--there is a bum genius organic in the trial. While I like the BG one size pocket, the organic seems much more bulky and doesn't fit as well.
Overall doing the trial has been great. It has helped us narrow down the style we like to pockets and see what features are most important to us. For example, we have a wiggler on our hands, so we want to do velcro instead of snaps. We had to do disposables too since he was so small and there is really no more work involved. We just throw all the CDs in a wet bag and dump it all in the washer every day or two. We've found that cloth wipes are a lot easier than throwing the diaper in the wet bag and the wipe in the garbage.
Re: Review of Jillian's Drawers trial (long)
I just went to Jillian's Drawers last weekend (I live about 40 minutes from the store) and it is the cutest store ever!
I enjoyed reading your review & agree with alot of your points--we're using pockets in the long term too (bought one-size BGs on Cotton Babies for $12 each--they are seconds & the "errors" on them are not even noticeable! Keep your eyes peeled in their clearance section because they post these sales periodically.)
I did not like prefolds--not absorbent at all.
totally agree that the KLOs get totally soaked--and in the beginning they were SO bulky on DD.
All the other diapers we are using right now are BumGenuis AIO XS (wanted something super easy for the beginning phase to encourage us to stick with it & it worked). We LOVE these but she is about 8 lbs now & is growing out of these quickly.
Anyways, I agree that CD-ing is super easy & the laundry is not a big deal at all (we have first floor laundry so it's not big deal to put on a load of dipes every other day--even DH does diaper laundry!).
I never did the Jillians trial but I've heard good things about it. I loved prefolds during the newborn stage but you're right... they are intimidating for dh and other family members. Now that she's 4 months, I use mostly BG Organic AIO's and Pockets. I actually find the AIO's one of the trimmest diapers she has .... much trimmer than the BG Pockets.
I'm glad you are sticking with cloth... I love it and it's actually really easy once you get a good system in place.
i agree! we liked the BG pocket one size the best. i have since tried the sized BG AIOs and like those a lot as well.
i'm now having a hard time finding the right detergent. DS seems to have a reaction to everything

Hey! I just finished my jillian's drawers trial as well. I actually loved the prefolds with covers too, but am not going to do it b/c of MH and my mom who are not so into it. Basically for the same reasons you said, we decided to go with the thirsties AIO. I don't like the one size as much though b/c I think they are bulkier than the sized ones so I'm just going to buy the small.
Q about the cloth wipes - how do yo use them? I haven't used any but thought about getting them too along with the diapers when I order them. Do you keep them in a container of water to keep them moist? How many do you think you'll need? Or do you wet the wipe before you change the dipe?
We just have a spray bottle with water. I check the diaper and close it back up if there is poo. Then spray one side of the wipe, kinda crumple it in my hand to get the water soaked through to both sides and warm it and then use it. MIL made 20 of them, which is way more than enough. We are washing diapers every other day right now and I'd guess we have used maybe a dozen or so in that time frame. Sometimes in the middle of the night, I'll just use disposable because I'm so groggy!
