Clingy?

We just started trying out a new childcare situation this week. My DD, 10 months, has done well there and she is happy when I pick her up, and when we go home up until just after dinner. The last hour or so before bedtime she has suddenly become super clingy (to me), pulling herself up on my shirt and beingrightinmyface. She'll play with her dad but if she can't see me then she becomes whiny.

I know this is a common phase for LOs, especially around this age, and I am thinking that she is either a) getting adjusted to the new situation b) tired at the end of a long day = clingy or c) just coincidental, and not that the childcare situation isn't right for her. At least that is what I am logically thinking but of course the doubts always creep back in. Thoughts?

Re: Clingy?

  • Hi- my LO is a bit clingy these days and we haven't moved her daycare yet. I was feeling guilty that she was missing me then I talked to my friend who is home most days and her daughter was doing the same thing even after being with her the whole day!  The supervisor at my current daycare told me that it is pretty typical for children to have an adjustment period and it is different for every child.  If they are a good sleeper they may have trouble at night, if they are not good nappers they may all of a sudden sleep alot at daycare, etc.  It is hard to tell if your LO is just going through a standard phase or reacting to her new situation.  But just give your LO extra cuddles and next thing you know they will be on to something else!

  • I think it's part age and part tiredness.  My son definitely experienced that.  If you are worried, tried to stop by in the middle of the day to see what your LO is like in  the childcare situation and also ask your childcare provider about LO's demeanor during the day.
  • I'm sure it's just coincidental.  She just wants to hang out with you - you comfort her.  Enjoy the snuggly time.
  • My kids are always clingy when they're tired or hungry.  Maybe the new daycare is wearing her out more?
