Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Question from 2nd Tri-er.

Hi ladies! I "technically" don't belong here, but I need some insight. My sister is ordering me to have my registry finished very soon, and I'm stuck on my stroller!

Here's what I'm hoping to do (and, yes...I know plans change, and if they do, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it Smile): We're going with the Combi Coccoro Convertible Car Seat and not using a newborn car seat. I don't want to have to lug a baby around in the car seat, even if she's sleeping. Since I'm not going with an infant seat, I obviously can't use a snap n go or a travel system. I want a stroller that will work for an infant, as well as grow with her. Originally, I wanted a Bugaboo Cameleon. However, it's expensive. I've looked into the Uppa Baby Vista and the Quinny Buzz. Those are the kinds of systems I'd like, but I'm not sure which one would be better or if there are even better options out there.

Please help! Any insight would be wonderful!!

Re: Question from 2nd Tri-er.

  • idk about your 2 choices. my only advice is you might want to re-think your plan to "not lug a baby around in a car seat." when the time comes, you'll probably be VERY grateful your LO is sleeping, and not want to wake him/her up by moving them from carseat to stroller.

just my opinion, probably not what you want to hear...

  • Both the Uppa Baby and the Quinny are great! I looked at both, we actually went with the Maxi Cosy Forray.

Make sure you arm yourself with a good sling, it will save your sanity :)

  • I have the Quinny Buzz and we just love it! Keep in mind that they can't ride in the main stroller part until they are 6 months or so (or can hold their heads up really well) so for all of those strollers you'd need to buy a separate bassinet attachment. We use the bassinet for walks around the neighborhood, but for going out and about we bought the Maxi-Cosi Mico infant seat which coordinates with the Quinny Buzz as a "travel system" and I'm so glad we did.

Anyway, I highly recommend the Buzz. I also liked the Bugaboos but I thought they were too pricey and I would just be paying for the name. A friend of mine has the UppaBaby and adores it!

P.S. The Quinny stroller I have is on sale at AlbeeBaby for $279.99 - a STEAL! It's last years model but it's the same as the new one. https://www.albeebaby.com/qubustinju.html

I think it all depends on the mom and the baby.  DS has HATED his infant carrier for the last month at least.  He screams the whole time he's in the car.  The only time he's asleep in it is when he cries himself to sleep while I'm driving and can't do anything about it.  I don't use the stroller to take him out anymore because we have a snap n go and DS is too little still for the Maclaren we have.  I agree with the pp about getting a sling or a carrier.  DS loves the moby.  It makes grocery shopping possible!

OP, if you're buying the stroller yourself, I recommend waiting til after LO is here to decide on what stroller you want.  You can put baby in them to test them out and see which LO prefers.

Ditto. Trust us when we say you DO NOT want to wake up a baby once he is sleeping. When your baby has been crying non-stop and is finally asleep in the car, the last thing you want to do is wake him up to put him in a stroller. LO has trouble sleeping during the day and you bet your butt that once he's sleeping in that car seat, I bring him home in it and keep him there until he wakes up on this own. I have the Graco Snugride 32 and Snap n Go and it's worked out perfectly. The car seat is easy to get in and out of the car and the Snap n Go is light and easy to open and close.

GL with your decision though, do whatever works for you.

Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • May I ask why you don't want to carry a baby in a car seat?  I was kind of like you before I had DS - I always wanted a newborn car seat - but I wasn't sure about getting a snap n go stroller because I figured I'd just take him out of the seat.  I ended up getting the snap n go and LOVE it.  It makes running errands so easy.  DS usually falls asleep in the car and will stay asleep in stores.  The last thing I'd want to do is wake him up when transfering him from the car seat to stroller.  Also, we live in a hot climate so I wouldn't want the car seat sitting in the car baking.  He also slept in his car seat for the first month or so.  I would have gone crazy without it.

Anyway, that didn't answer your question at all!  You probably have a very good reason for wanting the convertible seat, but the newborn one is certainly something to consider.

  • Just wanted to agree more with the other posters - the reason I'm so glad we got the infant seat to work with our stroller is because of the "falling asleep" thing.

So many times we've arrived at the grocery store, Target, etc. with me all set in the Moby, and he's asleep - and there's no way in HELLLL I will be waking him up to put him in the sling. So I can just snap the infant seat into the Quinny base and we're good to go.

    Definitely something to think about.

  • How tall are you two ladies? I'm 5'10" and would probably need a taller handle on my stroller.

Also, with the Quinny...how much of an issue are the air-filled tires?

  • I'm 5'6 but my DH is 6'1 and he has no problem with the handle - it's adjustable.

We haven't had a problem with the tires - DH filled them once in the beginning with a small hand pump and I haven't even thought about it since. It rides super smooth. The best part about the Quinny, IMO, is how easily it folds and unfolds and that you can collapse it with the seat on or off.

  • Okay. I suppose I should add, my family has always been about not tip-toeing around sleeping babies and moving them if you need to. As a result, we have very sound sleepers in our family and it works wonderfully.

Also, I'm a small-framed woman and carrying around a 9-11 lb carrier plus the weight of my baby would be too much. I only weighed 115 lbs pre-preg.

I also SAH, so the car seat wouldn't have to stay in the car "baking" as one poster said. We simply have to have something for when the LO needs to go somewhere.

I just know me and my family and I know that I don't want to lug a big carrier around and I don't want to be one of those wives that always has my husband lugging it around because it's too big for me to carry. I plan on using a Moby and wearing my LO once she gets here.

Like I said in my OP, I know plans can change, and if that should happen, we'll go out and get an infant car seat that can work with whatever stroller we end up with...until then, this is my plan. I just need to know opinions on systems that don't require an infant seat but still have an option (other than the infant car seat) for when my baby is new.

  • That makes sense, it's good that you're flexible to change your mind if you feel like you need to do something different. The bassinet attachments are nice for smaller babies, but it is one more big thing that you'd need to put in the car if you're taking the stroller somewhere and baby can only be flat on his/her back, which isn't as interesting for them as riding in the carseat on the stroller where they can look around a bit.

I won't lug the carseat carrier around either - way too heavy and unwieldy. It's either snapped into the stroller or he's in the Moby. I can't wait until he can use the *actual* stroller seat.

  • I have the Uppa Baby and love it.  We got it in part because DH is 6'7" and he can use it without kicking the wheels.  I will have to ditto what was said about rethinking the no infant seat thing.  convertible seats are great, but infant seats are really better for infants.  They are made more for their size.
  • So any down sides to the Quinny or the Uppa Baby? I've thought about the not being able to sit them up in the bassinet that one PP mentioned, but if she's awake and wants to look around, I figure that's when I'll put her in the Moby.
