Too many CD choices - so you tell me what to buy

My head is about to explode. Between Bummis and AIO's, organic and prefolds, wraps and liners, and newborn/infant/baby sizes, I am really lost. I just want someone to list exactly what I need to cloth diaper for at least the first 3 months (longer would be great) and I will buy it. I just want to have a diaper that fits, stays on, isn't too bulky, and is easy to use.

And for around $200 or less. Because I am on the verge of just doing disposables to make the madness stop with choosing the "right" cloth diaper.

If you write back, you have my undying adoration. :)

  • Did you post on Eco-Friendly as well?

  • Oh, good idea! Thanks.
  • My neighbor gave me a demonstration of bumGenius 3.0 diapers on her daughter a couple of weeks ago.  They seem pretty neat.  They are one size fits all.

  • i kept it as simple as i could & bought a bunch of BumGenuies 3.0's. that's it!
  • For the first couple of months I bought:

Kissaluvs size 0 (KL)s) (I have around 18 of these)

Prefolds (a dozen I think but I only got enough to supplement if I run out of clean KL0s before I do laundry)

    Thirsties xs covers

For after that...I bought Bum Genius organic AIOs and Bum Genius 3.0 fitteds.

  • If you want to keep it under $200 then I DO NOT recommend Bum Genius 3.0s.  Even during the buy 6, get one free deal they came out to $106 for 7 diapers.  Your best bet starting off is prefolds and covers.  We have 32 infant sized prefolds, which start at 7 lbs. through about 13 to 15 lbs.  We have a variety of covers to try them out, but the Thirsties Duo Wraps are about $12.50 and will work up to 18 lbs.

That said, we have some Fuzzi Bunz and Bum Genius One Size pocket diapers, some fitteds and about 8 covers.  We've spent a grand total of $400 for all our initial diapering supplies.  That includes the wet bags, detergent, cloth wipes, snappis and some doublers.

  • I'm doing bum genius 3.0. I like the ease of them, they had a lot of good reviews and they grow with the baby, so there's no need to buy more.

FWIW, I do think BGs are more $$ upfront, but knowing that you won't need to buy sizes up when the babies grow could save in the long run, IMO.

I spent $700 on 36 BGs (I'm having twins, so this is about a day and a half supply, I was told newborns go 10-14x/day), 2 wet bags for diaper bags, 2 pail liners, the diaper sprayer, pail, etc.

I figured we'd save roughly $1500 year one and approx. $2200 the following years (this can all be halved for those expecting 1 baby).

  • Another thing to consider - buy dipes with snaps, not aplix.  I have a handful of BG 3.0s with aplix, not snaps, and can't use them anymore because C knows how to get them off.
  • Unless you have a whopper of a baby, the BG One-Size won't fit for a couple months, so I wouldn't plan on starting with those.
  • We invested in the BG 3.0 Organics. I have 8 of those. I also have 8 Rumparooz. Both are one size so they will grow with the baby.

However, they are more expenssive than what you're looking for.

I would suggest looking into pre-folds and the thirsties Duos. They are less expenssive but you only have to buy two sizes. They also get rave reviews.

  • Oh - we're also starting out with PFs and covers.  We didn't start CDing with C until about 6 months, so this will be the first time for me with a newborn.

I do have to say that the Goodmamas are beautiful & super absorbent, but I dunno how they'll do with a NB.  They're pricey, though, so I'd look for them on Spots or Diaper Swappers.

  • To stay within your budget, I'd get a 2-3 dozen prefolds, 4-6 NB/XS covers, a couple Snappis for the prefolds, some Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds, and maybe a few AIOs. That's what I have so far.  I also bought a bunch of BG 3.0s and organic one-size AIOs, but have read in numerous places that those won't fit newborns and work better after 10-12+ lbs.  Lurk on the EFF board for a while - they are super helpful there.

There are also a bunch of trial CD programs out there, like through Jillian's Diapers, Sunshine Diapers, etc. so you can just try out CDs instead of buying.

  • I'm doing this for the first few months

And then I'll probably switch over to BG's.

There is a seller on etsy who will convert them to snaps for you...if you ask on EFF board, they will be able to direct you to that seller.

They also have "test drive kits" for older babies, so you could even do that later to see which diapers you want to buy.

  • -The BG 3.0s won't likely fit a newborn

-If $200 is your budget, you probably will be doing prefolds

  • For the first month we used disposables, and since then we've been using Bum Genius 3.0.  They are fantastic!  You stuff a liner inside and are good to go.  We never have leaks or blow-outs.  I have 19 diapers and wash them every other day.  It's very easy and even DH doesn't mind them =)

OP said she didn't want to spend more than $200.  That is why I recommend she not get Bum Genius.  You cannot cd your newborn with $200 worth of BG 3.0
