High-Risk Pregnancy

Low GD Numbers, Late Preg. 39 Weeks

So, for the past week or so, my numbers have really dropped a lot...My fasting numbers are in the 70's, my after breakfast is in the 90's, after lunch low 100's, and sometimes my dinner ares in the 80-105's...My after lunch and dinners are usually in the the 115-127 range...and everything seems to be really low for me...Do you think this is because I am getting ready?

I have an appt. tomorrow and gonna ask the dr. if this is normal...but just curious if anyone else has noticed this?

Re: Low GD Numbers, Late Preg. 39 Weeks

  • I am type 1 diabetic so I try to read up on such things as much as possible. One article I found said that (for women with an insulin dependency during pregnancy) your blood sugar is more likely to drop in the last few weeks of pregnancy do to changing horomones in the last stages. If I remember correctly, this is because the baby is having her last growth spurt in the last few weeks so she consumes a lot of your carbs therefore making any insulin overeffective (because those carbs have already been taken care of by the baby the insulin drops your numbers more than really needed). Does that make sense? That was the best way I could describe it :)

  • No problem :) Glad to help in any way I can.
  • I had also heard that the placenta can 'break down' towards the very very end of your pregnancy, causing the insulin resistance to ease up a bit.
  • Yes, I was told my sugar levels would drop / insulin requirements would drop at the very end.

  • This happened to me but for me it started around 28 weeks and I was on insulin so they started to lower my dosage around 30 weeks.

I have read that "textbook" definition is that they start to fall around 36 weeks as your placenta is producing less hormones. My doctors said the same thing but they started to do bi-weekly NST/BPP to make sure everything was okay.

This. I assume you are going weekly now, and they should be monitoring you carefully for placenta breakdown. A 38w diabetic placenta is like a 40w non-diabetic placenta - hence why GD/diabetic mommies won't go past their due date very often...
