2nd Trimester

Failed (and very upset)

So the nurse calls me today and tells me (in so many words) that I failed my 1 hr glucose test I did Friday. What really irks me is that they only told me to fast for "at least 2 hrs" prior to the test, but I went ahead and fasted for almost 6 (I was busy at work anyway). And yet I STILL failed. She said my number was 148.

So she said it's not something to worry about right now, but I have to go back this Friday and do the THREE hour test.

I'm just really frustrated because, for the most part, I eat relatively healthy. I try not to use being pregnant as an excuse to slam down icecream every night, and I only drink maybe one soda a day, if that. I eat lots of meat and veggies and yogurt, and drink lots of milk and water. I mean obviously I'll have the occasional dessert or piece of candy, but I try to be conscious of everything I eat. What gives?!? I just wanted to cry when she told me, because I feel so cheated. Other people just binge eat like crazy and their tests come out totally fine.

Re: Failed (and very upset)

  • GD has nothing to do with what you eat or don't eat.

  • From what I read, if you're going to get GD, you're going to get it... it has nothing to do with your diet.  You just have to change your diet if you do have it.

That said, fingers crossed for passing the 3-hr test!

  • There is a very big genetic component to diabetes (including gestational diabetes).  Not that that makes you feel better at all, but that it is probably nothing you did or didn't do.  I'm sorry you have to do the 3 hour test Sad.  Good luck on it!  Fingers crossed!

  • Try not to get too upset. I may be wrong, but isn't the cut off point 140? If so then you didn't fail by much. The same thing happened to me when I was pg with DD. I failed the first test, but passed the 3 hour. It sucks that you have to take the 3 hour, but there is still hope!

  • Thanks everyone. I guess I've had a really smooth pregnancy so far, so this isn't a big deal. I was just really bummed, especially since it's not something I can control.

  • I had it with ds. I eat very healthy, exercise regularly, and still had it. I was SO upset. It was really easy for me to control though. Since I already ate pretty well, I just had to make a few adjustments. Good luck with the 3 hr!
  • SNAP!!!!

I failed the 1hr test 2 weeks ago, and had to go through the 3hr test this past Friday. I am the same as you i drink loads of water, i have maybe 1 soda a day, i eat veggies and all the healthy stuff i can cope with before i reach for a Big Mac, and i still failed my test!!

The thing that annoyed me the most was that i was told i could eat 1 hr before the test, so i had my usual lunch...and guess what?...surprise, surprise i failed the test! It really got to me as my best mate passed the test even though she drinks 7 - 9 cokes a day, and a healthy breakfast for her was a donut!!

Anyway i am still waiting for the results of my test, fingers crossed it'll be ok! Good luck, remember to take a book and a big bottle of water for after the test as they don't allow you to drink more than a sip as it can cause the glucose solution to become watered down and make you fail!

  • I agree with PP that having GD isn't just about what you eat. I've been diagnosed with GD since about 10 weeks, if not a bit earlier. I am on a GD diet, but as the nurse explained when I went for my diabetic education class, it has to deal with the hormone that your placenta releases. I dont have much of an issue with my numbers after I eat(unless I eat something I shouldn't), its my fasting/overnight number that I take when I get up that is too high. I'm now on insulin for it because that is the only way to get that number down, since I'm not eating anything once I have my shot. They also said that it is very popular for women that have GD to have to take insulin at night to help the morning number, especially the farther along they get. But I do know a friend that failed the one hour and then passed the 3 hour, so there is a chance that you will still pass the 3 hour. Try not to get yourself worked up about taking the 3 hour. GD is very manageable and in the end can be very helpful for both you and your baby.
