eayode - dairy question

DS has been having some fussiness and tummy issues and I've been thinking about cutting out dairy. I've actually been avoiding it since friday when I first read about the correlation, but i now realized a few things I thought were dairy free actually have milk products in them.

Could you tell me how quickly you noticed a change in DD once you went dairy free? I have a call in to my ped right now, too.

I'll be sad if I have to give it up, especialy since bfing has not been fun at all to begin with, but we'll see.

 Thanks!

Re: eayode - dairy question

  • Hey- sorry to hear about Collin's tummy issues and fussiness :( Fussy newborns are the worst. I think it probably took about 2 weeks until the fussiness got better once I cut out the obvious dairy products. I never really cut out all food with dairy in it b/c I was not about to search through ingredient lists looking for all the different ways dairy is in foods (you have to look for whey and a ton of other dairy proteins). Has his poop been mucusy? I know that sounds gross, but that's another way that I figured out dairy was bothering Holly. Once I stopped eating dairy that was a big thing that changed- no more mucusy poops.

If you stop dairy you will have to take a calcium supplement b/c the baby will suck up all your calcium to get what he needs. It really hasn't been as bad as I thought it would be, but I definitely miss cheese, ice cream and milk a lot. You do just get used to it. Breastfeeding was and continues to be important to me, so I needed to make that sacrifice.

Sorry to hear that bfing isn't going so well. I hope everything works out.

  • sorry to butt in...

I had to give up dairy when DD was just a few weeks old; it can take upto 2 weeks for it to get out of your baby's system however. I cut out all dairy and went to goat milk, goat yogurt, goat and sheep cheeses. The things no one tells you about BFing.

I started dairy again when DD was about 9mo old and she's doing fine with it (still BFing), but did not do well when I gave her cow milk yogurt.

  • thanks, ladies. the ped suggested giving it a few more days, but i'll try to be a little more patient. i just stocked up on lots of non-dairy snack options to try. and yes - his diapers have been mucusy. and i'll go you one grosser and share that they've been green, as well. fussy baby with green poop - this is not what i signed up for!

  • oh and it's good to know that i might not have to be crazy vigilant and may even be able to re-introduce milk later. i'm trying to stay positive and keep telling myself that maybe it will help me lose the baby weight faster Wink

  • fwiw i think the non dairy diet helped me shed my baby weight in no time at all... in fact i'm thinner than i was pre pregnancy. i think nursing combined with no dairy means i've lost weight a lot faster than i would have otherwise... so there is a silver lining! but the green poop thing is definitely indicative of a food allergy/intolerance.
