Re: Baby Vitamins for BF babies

  • I did not. Posted on this topic the other day, but studies I read said exposure to the sun every day can provide enough Vitamin D to prevent rickets. Even just 2-3 minutes outdoors.

From what I understand, the Vitamin D concerns tends to mostly affect those in Northern climes that don't spend as much time outside.

Ditto this. The nurse practictioner at our office told us the same thing.

  • I didn't for a while, even though pedi said he recommended it.  The APA revised their recs of vitamin D intake, blah blah blah....but it was so counterintuitive to me that breastmilk might somehow be lacking in this one specific vitamin.  Anyways, long story short: I didn't try the supplemental vitamins until HC was closer to 6 months, and even then it was more haphazard, adding them to her solids from time to time when I remembered.  They constipate babies (at least mine) terribly, and they taste even worse!  So I never tried giving them to her orally on their own; heard that's nearly impossible anyhow. :)  GL in your decision making; I think myrall is right, though, that if you take your son out in the light (when it stops raining there, at least) from time to time he ought to get enough vitamin D for now.  Or ask your pedi what he/she thinks, too, just for more information.

  • We supplemented DS with polyvisol with iron even though he was FF only after 4 weeks. He was STILL low on iron at 9 months and we had to start giving a prescription iron supplement. I don't think it can hurt to give a vitamin supplement with D, especially now that we're entering winter months.

  • Just went to the pedi for Ava's 6 month check up last week.  Breastfeed babies do not need any extra vitiamins until 6 months of age and then it is only Iron and Vitamin D they need.  The pedi said she will get enough Iron from the cereal if given twice a day and she recommended Tri-vi-sol w/ Vitamin A, C, and D (not Poly-vi-sol) for the Vitamin D she needs.

  • We use Baby D - LLL International has new guidance on the issue.  You might want to check it out.

ETA: I suck and don't take my PNVs, so I feel more inclined to give Joseph the Baby D.  It's a little tablet that dissolves, and it doesn't taste bad (I tried it)

  • I do not supplement and I exclusively BF.  I continue to take my prenatals (which continue Vita D).

In the past (a few years back) I was Vita D deficient and my MD put me on prescripton Vita D for a while.  So right before I gave birth my OB checked my Vita D levels at my request and they were very good.  Living in the South helps.  A few minutes a day of expose to the sun does help.

  • We used a different Doctor for Ridge than Colton and both recommend the vitamins.  Although one specified with iron and the other said not to do it with iron.

So, I give Colton polivisol with iron ever other day or every third day ...so if he needs it he will get it.    If they don't need it, they will pee it out.

    Oh, we exclusively breastfeed too.
