3rd Trimester

Growth spurts and Weight Gain

Ok one more question (thanks for the help thus far).

So pretty much this pg, I've stayed on target with the 1-2lb/ week weight gain, in fact I was soooo excited that I was going to be a few lbs under for my appt. today. FAT CHANCE now! Like I said in my previous post, I literally blew up in a week's time (went from strangers not saying a word to everyone commenting and wanting to rub my belly) and I jumped on the scale a few times over the past week and nope it wasn't water weight, I legitimately gained 5 lbs. So...I'm wondering if anyone else thinks or has seen that there is a correlation between growth spurts and weight gain.

Ok deep inside I'm worried that this 5 lb/week thing might continue! I'm pretty careful about what and how much I eat. I walk for 20 mins at least 3 days a week.

Re: Growth spurts and Weight Gain

  • I would try not to obsess and try not to "out" myself to the dr that I gained weight. Just wait and see. What are you really going to do about it anyway?

  • I'm sure you'll be fine. I've had a few weeks here and there where I'd gain alot. Just as long as its not most weeks that you gain that much.
  • Really, just try to relax.  I'm a FTM, but I'm sure the weight gain will taper off at some point.  If it makes you feel better, I gained 9lbs in 4 weeks.  5 of those pounds I gained in 2 weeks.
  • Im sure you have nothing to worry about, I only gained about 2 pounds every month until my 28 week appt I had gained 13 pounds since my 24 week appt, and now two weeks later I have only gained 1 pound. It all varies and my doc says its completely fine that every woman gains it differently, and that your body will do whatever it needs to do. My doc told me about his wife that with all 4 of her pregnancies she doesnt gain but maybe a few pound in the first two trimesters and then 3rd trimester she always gains 55 pounds! So every woman is completely different, If you are really concerned ask your doctor but Im sure your fine =]

  • Yes, if you look bigger you probably have gained more weight. Don't worry about it. Just eat healthy and keep moving so that you know you are doing all you could be doing for your baby and your body.?

I gained 7 pounds in three weeks and my doctor said, "Good for you!" I'd do like the pp said and not mention it -- your doc probably won't say a word.?

  • Your weight is still fluctuating. And anything can happen, try not to stress about it! If there is a problem with your weight gain then your OB will discuss it with you.

  • I totally would not worry about a 5lb gain right now.  I do personally think that the baby has weeks where it gains more than others.  For me personally, at 20 weeks I was still at my pre-pg weight.  At 24 weeks, I was 8lbs heavier.  At 28 weeks, I was still at my 24 week weight.  At 32 weeks, I was up another 7lbs and am still at that weight today.  All along my bump has been growing appropriately and the doc has said nothing about weight at all.  I think had my bump not been keeping up with normal growth rate charts, then he might say something but being that I have measured a week ahead since week 12, he's not concerned and neither am I.  I am hoping by the end I will have gained 25lbs in total, which leaves me 10 lbs for the remaining 7 weeks...I'll probably go over, but shouldn't hit more than 30lbs total and that makes me happy.  I was about 10-15lbs overweight when I conceived, so the baby is just taking what he needs and I am using up some fat stores, which is good.  See what your doc has to say at your next appt.  He may or may not be concerned about GD.  If the doc isn't worried, then you shouldn't be either.

This, exactly - I even gained the same 13 lbs during that time!
