Okay.. i had a job interview last week at a local restaurant/diner, Yours Truly. Well, i went in, wore something figure flattering to somewhat hide my ever growing 25 week bump, and i was seated for the interview. The manager then sat down, interviewed me, told me i was perfect for the position, articulit [sp!!!], and experienced. She then handed me a menu to take home and memorized and offered me the job. I was so excited! Welp, she offered to walk me out... As soon as i stood up, her eyes went straight to my belly and she started to look concerned. She then stuttered out, ''well, we will call you in 2 days to let you know the details of your training dates and when you will start after i check with the GM, thanks for coming in'', and completely blew me off! By the way,,, that was over a week ago... i never got the phone call to start the job.
THAT JUST PISSES ME OFF. I know that stuff is technically illegal, but nobody really cares when it comes to hiring people. They look down on us like pregnancy is an infectious swine flu disease, and im sick of it. Just because there is a child growing inside of me doesn't change my skills, and my ability to do good at my job.
Re: my vents are usually drama.. THIS ONE IM PISSED!!!
That sucks! I would be pissed too! How rude!
Have you called THEM?? If they offered you the job, and then declined to call after seeing you were pg, that definitely IS illegal, and I would consult someone in your state labor department...
DAMN YOURS TRULY AND THEIR EVIL NATSO FRIES. They always come out too hot anyway.
I hope you can call her out on it. It was blatent she discriminated against you.
This. This post is exactly what I was thinking. Grrr. That makes me angry. It's like employers see pregnant women as a ticking time bomb that if they hiring, they might have to hire again in a few months.
you have every right to be pissed. unfortunately, i see and hear of this kind of stuff happening all the time. If there was any type of job offer spoken to you, I would call the general manager and explain the situation. They can not deny you a job just because you are pregnant....
I don't blame you for being upset. I do have to ask you though, what exactly were you applying for? Waitress, hostess? It may not be so much your pregnancy as it is their fears of you injuring yourself/baby and suing them. Legally it's wrong to deny you, but from a business standpoint it's different. Restaurants count on their waitresses to bring in the business. Unfortunately, a lot of people think pg women shouldn't waitress, and might actually be mad at the restaurant for "making" you work in your "condition".I was in the industry for many many years, and finding a fabulous waitress is always exciting. They get their regular customers who keep coming back, they show up on time, are available on call, etc.
Management may be looking at you as someone who will have to either quit soon or take a leave. That will leave them short-staffed. Maybe they needed you to help be a fill in for other staff wanting to go on vacation. They wouldn't be able to count on you for that in a few months.
So, while I don't blame you for being really ticked off about being promised the job then not getting it, there may be more to it than you realize. No business wants to hire someone who will be well liked, only to have them maybe quit in a few months.
Wrong in a legal sense, but business is business, and unfortunately, the restaurant business counts on all their staff being available all the time. I would call and ask them their policy on hiring pregnant women; if you really like the restaurant and think you would enjoy working there, ask them if you would be considered after the baby is born. I know it's not fair, but in reality there is not much you can do about this discrimination except file a complaint.
That might not even work because they would probably say they were afraid you might get hurt on the job, or even that you would not be able to perform your duties (lifting, bending, etc.) Call your local employment office and check what the legalities are in your state. Then you can make the decision of what you should do. Good luck and don't give up.
While it is upsetting, I certainly can see the other side of things. I used to manage a tanning salon and if someone applied for the job visibly pregnant I would have to weigh my options pretty heavily. It's not an easy thing to have such a quick turn around and with anyone you can't ever be entirely certain of their long term plans and especially when that person is pg. Had I been in her shoes, 1st I never would have offered the job on the spot...that was her mistake and she should own up to it and allow you to be trained and work since she opened that can of worms, 2nd it's a pain in the butt to train a newbie to begin with, it takes a LOT of time and sometimes a LOT of patience and knowing that it is highly possible for an individual to only be with me for a short period of time I have to take that into consideration. I would also have to consider the persons ability to actually to the tasks required of the job while in their current physical state. (with the tanning beds, you have to be able to do a lot of bending and scrubbing and running around - while it's not impossible for someone to be able to do it while pg it poses certain challenges.
The same was true for individuals who were in HS and about to graduate and go off to college...I didn't hire a lot of HS anyway because I was trying to get 18+ yo employees primarily but for those that would be graduating soon I had to consider if putting the effort into training them would be worth my time should they leave. There is usually always someone else who is just as qualified and capable.
That's not fair. If you're capable of doing the job, then they should absolutely still let you do it. I agree with many of the previous posters. Call and ask what's up, and if they give you any BS, threaten them with legal action.
I found out I was pregnant the second week I was temping at my current job and I was TERRIFIED they wouldn't keep me on permanently once they knew I was pregnant. Luckily, that wasn't the case. But they shouldn't discriminate against you based on your pregnancy. Speak up!
