Tummy sleepers?

Lila loves to nap on our chests face down.  I'm convinced that she will start sleeping much better once I can put her on her tummy.  I know I have to wait until she's stronger but I'm just curious - when did you start letting DC sleep that way?

Re: Tummy sleepers?

  • We tried back sleeping for like a week, and it was a nightmare.

She loved sleeping on her tummy immediately, and when we did, she was much happier, and slept so much better!!

  • Never. We always put Evie down on her back, and do the same with Gavin. Once Evie was old enough to flip on to her stomach on her own, we'd let her stay that way, but we never put her down that way.

SIDS is the leading cause of death for infants 1-12 months old.  Since the Back to Sleep campaign started, SIDS deaths have dropped almost 50%.  Just something to keep in mind.

  • Cambryn is pretty much a full time tummy sleeper now. She loves it! She puts her bum up in the air and arms straight up... its so cute. She will NOT sleep on her back.. She yells as soon as I try it.

  • We were also told to never put them on their fronts to sleep. Only when they are able to roll themselves over and back again is when you can becasue of SIDS.

  • As soon as she could roll over easily both ways we let her and even put her down on her tummy. She started sleeping much better!

  • We waited until they flipped to sleep on their belly by themselves.

  • SIDS risk reduction is something I'm passionate about, having worked for the SIDS Foundation of Washington. Once Max can roll both ways, he can sleep on his tummy if he sleeps better that way. SIDS risk peaks between 2 and 4 months, and 90% of deaths happen before 6 months of age, just as an FYI.

Same, I think she was about 6 months old.

  • Thanks ladies. I know about SIDS and all the stats, I just know that there will come a time when it's okay and I wondered when that would be.
  • All three of my kids have/had reflux so they slept much better on their tummies.  With all 3 kids, our peds recommended tummy sleeping after exhausting all the other options.  The twins sleep so much better and we don't hear the grunting, choking and squeaking all night long anymore.

Our ped did give us some rules about doing tummy sleeping.  One was once you started, they always need to be put on their tummy to sleep.  You can't alternate.  She said this is because they sleep deeper on their tummies so if you start mixing back sleeping in there too, the tummy sleeping becomes even deeper and that's where the experts see some potential SIDS risks (babies sleeping too deeply to wake enough to move when not getting enough oxygen).  The second recommendation was to have them sleep in the same room as us.  That way we are there to hear them and see what's going on if needed.

  • Yeah, you should wait til he flips himself that way.   I started doing it when Ben was maybe 7 months old?  And he didn't roll yet.  For some reason Ben was a super late roller.  I knew he *could* roll though - he was really strong.  It was more like it just never occurred to him to do it.   But after 6 months the risk is pretty low.  ANd I fretted about putting him on his tummy even then.   And it really didnt' help him sleep better IMO.  He was such a crappy sleeper at that age I was just screwed no matter what.   He does sleep on his tummy now a lot though.   But he's nearly 3 years old.  So he can sleep however he wants.

Good luck.  I know sleep stuff is just horrible.

One thing you might try is warming up the baby's bed before you put him in?   That might be more like sleepig on you.   Sleeping on you is so much more than front vs. back.  It's warm and it's your breathing and heart beat...
