I do day care in my home for one little guy. Dad drops him off in the morning and leaves the car seat. Mom picks him up in the evening and the car seat is there. If LO will be at day care and you aren't sure if you will pick them up, just ensure you leave the seat.
I think 2 car seats is superfluous and a waste of money unless you have twins.
We only had one infant car seat, but that easily goes from car to car. When we switched to a convertible carseat, we bought the britax marathon for my car (she's in there most of the time, I commute with her and drop her off at babysitters), and bought a cosco scerena (sp?) for my dh's truck. With coupons at babies r us, it was only 40 bucks.

I bought one carseat with 2 bases. When we get to convertable seat stage, we'll probably buy 2 seats- one for each car. I don't want to constantly have to trade the carseat to another car.
One infant carseat, one base for now. We received a second base as a gift but decided to return it for now and see what our needs are. We will get a convertible carseat down the road but will just get one. Most of the time, my husband and I will drive together.
1 infant carseat with 1 base. I have the Grace Snugride and it can be used without a base. I used the car with the base on a regular basis and using it without the base was fine for here and there.
For the convertible w/ DD we got 2, but when DD#2 arrives, she'll use the second carseat, so we'll just have a 'kid' car, and a 'non-kid' car unless something crazy happens. I stay at home for the most part, so we don't really have to worry too much about us both having seats in our cars simultaneously.
For the moment we have one infant seat with one base. We are supposed to be going to Korea soon after and will only have one car shipped so we are waiting to see if Korea is still a go before deciding.
We're just getting one but that's because we only have one car! So kind of pointless for us to get two! If we had two cars we'd get one car seat and two bases!.
Like everyone else 1 seat 2 bases. When she outgrew the infant seat we broke down and got two car seats.
This is what we did. When we bought the convertible seats, we spent a little more on mine-I ride DS around most often. I really do hate taking the carseat out and re-installing it; and I'm always nervous that I'm doing it wrong, I would hate to do that on a regular basis.
We are getting 1 car seat and 2 bases. Originally I wanted 2 car seats but then we decided that the carseat would never be staying in the car so if we have 2 bases we would be fine.
When DD was born, we did one carseat, two bases. When she outgrew that seat, we bought one Britax Boulevard, although my parents later gave us a Britax Marathon "just in case." It's currently in DH's car, but idk that we'll bother installing the base for the infant seat in his car. It's so incredibly rare that he'd need to take both kids in his car. If he has to go somewhere with DD, he infinitely prefers taking my mamamobile.
