Severe constipation from one serving of oatmeal???

Poor DS has been severely constipated the past 2 days - it's to the point where he is screaming in pain with huge tears running down his cheeks as he strains and pushes.  It's not that nothing is coming out (so I don't think the thermometer trick would help) - it's just has a really hard texture.  I feel so bad for him and don't know how to make him more comfortable.

I think the problem is that I gave him oatmeal for the first time yesterday (late morning-ish).  He's had trouble pooping ever since.

Even though it's a no-no to give 2 new foods so close together, I gave him some prunes this afternoon (after his best efforts only produced two little tootsie rolls).  He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable when he's not trying to go, so hopefully the prunes will help soften things up.

Any advice?

Thanks...  Mary

  • prunes will definitely help, but until they kick in try giving him more liquid - water or apple juice would be even better. You can always mix oatmeal with fruit purees in the future. Hope he feels better soon!

  • This happened to DS (with rice cereal).  The pedi told us to do one of the following plus to make the cereal more watery.  It broker my heart to see DS crying in pain but when we gave him water it helped him (and pretty quickly, within a day).

    2 oz of water

    2 oz of apple juice

    prunes

  • When we first started rice cereal, I would always pair it up with a 'cleansing' fruit, such as prunes, peaches, or pears.  Rice cereal is the most binding and can cause the most constipation.  Oatmeal is actually recommended to give as an alternative if rice cereal causes constipation.

  • ugh. that sucks. water always helps DD. prune juice never really worked as well.
