At what age was your DC (clothing) label conscious?

I was reading a long thread on a local message board started by a mom who wanted to buy clothes that would help her DD fit in at her new school. My DD just turned three and recognizes some brands (Polo insignia, anything with a Disney fairy or princess). But I wondered how old your DD or DS was when he/she started expressing clothing brand preferences.

I wouldn't be surprised if it started sooner than when I was a kid. My siblings and I were raised without tons of money and my mom tried to buy the labels that made us happy but most of the time we just couldn't afford them.

I think that my personal reaction to not having what I wanted has been to buy my daughter cute, trendy and popular clothing pieces (even before she noticed or cared) but I also buy basic items (leggings, shirts for layering, etc.) from target.

Just wondered when children start to notice trendy clothes and want to have them. What's your opinion?

  • I have no idea but my kids are 4 and 3 and they have no clue.

  • We grew up shopping the sales at Kohls for the most part. I knew about some name brands but we never could afford to buy them. I may have had one Guess shirt as a kid.

DD doesn't know anything about brands yet. Besides recognizing a few characters, she doesn't care. I just buy what I like for her, although I do refuse to buy anything really expensive. Seems like a waste when it only fits for a year. Besides that, I don't buy designer clothes for myself either. I can find cute stylish clothes that last without spending $$$, for both myself and DD. I don't see myself changing the way I shop. If she wants something expensive that's brand name when she's older, I guess she'll have to wait for her birthday or Christmas, or earn the money to buy it herself.

  • DD will be 5 in November, and doesn't care, or know. I don't really buy things with logos though.

  • My parents had the money, but refused to buy it.  I always wore jeans and plain shirt, like a turtleneck.  No one would comment on plain stuff, but they didn't make fun of it either, like they would if it wasn't the it brand.  My niece is 7 and is clothing aware, and wants to look nice, but is not yet, "it has to be from limited too or wherever."  Some kids never care.  Middle school is still a big time for that.
  • My dd is 5 and doesn't notice or care about name brands.  She'll wear pretty much anything I pick out, she only complains if it's not comfortable which I don't blame her for.

She has a friend with an 8 year old sister and her mom said she is extremely picky.  I think it will be fun once dd has opinions and develops her own style.  She may as well forget about shopping at any place like Limited Too though, I went in there out of curiousity and wow...trashtastic!

  • I think I started noticing around 6th grade, when I was 11.  I wanted cute Guess jeans, haha.

BUT, I wore a uniform [Catholic school girl here] from k-12, too.  So I could have been a little skewed.

I think it's really child dependent and really depends on who your child is around and what they are exposed to.

  • Noah is 9 and is just now showing a bit of interest in picking out his own clothes. He's wants "cool skater stuff", not "fancy" polos and button downs. But, he doesn't care what store they come from yet. My good friend on the other hand has a 10 year old girl and she is very aware of labels.
  • My almost 5yo DD has no idea about 'labels'.  But I will say, this was the first year that she really had a preference on what she thought was cute.  We were shopping at an outlet mall & she walked straight up to the Gymboree window, pointed at an outfit in it & said "I want THAT.  That's cute mom!"  LOL.  Sigh, I guess my days of just buying clothes for her w/o input are over....
  • Honestly, really early at our house.  My 2 1/2 year old had a fit the other day because he wanted to wear his Nike shoes not Addidas. I think it had more to do with color than brand, but he was specifically whining for the NIke by name, and specifically refusing the Addidas by name. He matches his Nike socks when he wears Nike shoes and Addidas socks for addidas shoes. He has strong preferences for what he is wearing in general, it doesn't always have to do with brand though.

My DD has been able to name brands on clothes labels (not just expensive ones) for as long as I can remember.  She can easily ID something from TCP, GAP,  Old Navy, Gymbo, etc. etc.  She hasn't gotten to the point of only wanting certain brands, but she is concious.

  • DS started caring last year in 7th grade.

  • My kids are 8 & 6 and they both could care less what store or label it has on it.
  • I think a lot of kids start to care when other kids start to notice or point out what brands they're wearing. When I was in 7th grade Duck Head shorts with polos and Guess Jeans were the rage. I never cared about stuff like that until this jackass kid in my class started pointing out who had what labels. That made me care, and so I started wearing what was popular rather than just what I liked. That same jackass did the same thing about "real" and "fake" Birkenstocks in high school. I had real ones at that point and didn't care so much by then what he thought of me, but he still rode the asses of other kids who had fake ones. Teenagers can be such a-holes to each other.
She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • I think kids start noticing at an early age, but most do not really care until middle school. I would also say it is probably more important to girls sooner. My DD is almost 11 and while she is aware, she hasn't started the "I have to have XX from XX store" stage yet.

  • My kids have no clue.  Other than sneakers - Nike or Converse - everything else I get them is from The Children's Place, Babies R Us, Target, and sometimes Macy's.  I don't think I knew about logos until I was maybe 12.
