3rd Trimester

Stop trying to freak me out! (Mom Vent)

We had our 34w ultrasound yesterday and LO is already 6lbs Surprise The tech said they are correct within 1/2 lb, so she could be as little as 5 1/2 or as much as 6 1/2. I had a little panic attack and hyperventilated, continued by hysterical crying because I'm likely giving birth to a watermelon, really don't want to have a section, and am no longer hopeful for the nice birth experience I had in mind.

So I'm already freaked out and my mother (who came this morning and will be here till tomorrow night - wish me luck ladies because I've already reached my limit with her) makes some comments to my most recent symptoms. I've been having pressure since last night that I mean to ask my OB about when I see her Tuesday afternoon. Mother dearest tells me the story of how it felt like her water was going to break, so she went to the hospital, where it did indeed break before anyone saw her. So she thinks I'm going into labor soon and wants it to happen this weekend while she's here.

Argh! That's the LAST thing you want to say to me right now! I literally picked up some puppy training pads to put on my mattress today while we wre out because now I'm freaked about premature labor.

Great, thanks a bunch Mom!

  • My baby is very big too so don't feel bad.  He is weighing in at 6.5 lbs at 35 weeks!

  • Sonogram measurements are most inaccurate during the 3rd trimester. They can be off by 2 lbs, not 1/2 lb. I've known people who were told they'd have huge babies (9-10 lbs) and their babies were born at 6-7 lbs (full term).

  • Luckily your Mom's not a doctor, and most likely not a psychic, so her *wanting* you to have the baby this weekend means jack sh*t.   Take comfort in that.

Also - 2lbs is what I was told the margin of error is too...

  • My mom gave birth to me naturally, her water broke at home, and I appeared like 4 hours later, and I was 8lb 8oz and my mom is very petite. I say this just because the incidence of babies being to big to birth vaginally is really really small! And I highly doubt that they are actually accurate with in 1/2lb, from what I've read it's more like with in 2lbs. But if your water does break, perhaps you ovulated earlier then they think and baby is actually full term. I would trust that your LO will know when they are ready to come. I must say you are brave to have mom stay with you, I know DH and I couldn't take it! Good luck dealing with your mom, and try to enjoy this last bit of time before LO arrives.

  • So let me get this straight. .

On one hand you are scared the baby is going to be big?  On the hand you are scared you will go into labor and have the baby early before it gets bigger?

Chill out.  Child birth is scary no matter what but there is no sense in getting wound up about unlikely scenarios.  You will be fine as many many many many other women have been before you and will be afterwards.

^^This. Don't believe a word they tell you about that half pound junk. I was told my ds was 6-6.5 pounds 2 weeks before he was born at 10.5. I can't tell you how many people I know that were told they were having huge babies based on growth estimates and ended up having a 7-8 pound baby. And I wouldn't worry about a c-section just yet either. Like I said, my son was 10.5 and I had a complication free vaginal birth.

  • I know a petite mom, couldn't be 110# soaking wet, and about 5'3". She had a 10#4oz baby, vaginally, all natural.

And another similar build who had a 10lb14oz baby.

    Whatever will be, will be.
