c/s Mamas - a recovery question

So the actual incision site feels fine - I have sensation, but it does not hurt at all.  It's the area around and in front of my hip bones that is KILLING me!  I feel like red hot pokers have been implanted under my skin.  Did anyone else feel that?  I assume it's normal - it's just really weird that it hurts no where near where I was cut open and stitched back together...

Also, the area just above the incision is still numb. It sorta feels like they still have me bandaged up there, but no bandage.  When I touch the area, it's like touching it through a thick gauze bandage or something.  How long did that sensation last for you?  I could have sworn one of the nurses said it lasts for months (though I was pretty drugged up at the moment).  I'm sad to think that it'll still feel weird and numb when I'm back into my good ole hip hugging Sevens! :(

Re: c/s Mamas - a recovery question

  • I had that same pain and was told it was because things were "tightened and stretched" to stitch me back up.  It was more one side than the other but it does get better soon.  As for the numbness, that takes a little longer.  I actually still have a little bit of it but most of the sensation is back.  It may not take as long for you, but mine took a few months.  And I hope you get back into your Sevens faster than me!

  • Yes. I actually freaked out at about 5 days pp because I got such a sharp, stabbing pain above my scar that I was sure something horrible had happened. It was fine :)

As far as the numb feeling - that lasted for awhile. Several months actually, I can't really remember when I got full feeling back. You'll probably have a lot of itchiness as sensation returns too, so be prepared for that.

    Congratulations again!

  • I had the same pain and about a week post c-section I had quite a bit of bruising show up in that area. I called in and the nurse explained it the same way Lynda did. I also had the numbness, but mine only lasted a few weeks.

  • Oh man, that pain was the WORST. I hated it and unfortunately it lasted for awhile. Every once in awhile I'll move the wrong way and I'll still feel a burning sensation there. Not fun! :( When I called about it, they said the incision on the inside goes all the way from hip to hip...so there are internal stitches all the way out to there apparently. And they do a whole lot of stretching/tugging, so I'm sure the muscles there are very damaged.

The numbness around my incision site wore off after a month or two, I think. I still have no feeling on the actual incision, though. I have no clue when (or if) that will ever come back.

  • well i can say there isn't a 'normal' recovery because both of my c-sections have been totally and completely different.  my first, i didn't have much pain and the numbness was gone in a month.

this 2nd time, i'm still numb (and nowhere close to being back in my sevens.  sigh)

  • The pain you're describing is normal.  I had more on one side and the doc said it was because the side she stands on gets pulled harder.

I had numbness with #1 until I got pg with #2 at 9 months pp.  I still have some, but don't notice it other than when I touch the incision.

  • The pain is normal I guess.  I didn't have much pain around the c-section but every now and then I'd have an awful sticking pain in my stomach (and still do now months after).  I mean the kind of pain that makes you stop what your doing and say WTF.  I did feel numb and swollen down there for a while after though for about 2 weeks or so.  Hang in there.
