My Dr. told me that ALL Doctors have to recommend that pregnant women get it but that no way would he let his pregnant wife get it. It hasn't been tested enough to know the effects. Thanks but no thanks... I'll pass -
I find it interesting that so many pregnant women won't touch a cup of coffee, won't get highlights, won't paint their nails, won't take a warm bath, won't eat a ham sandwich...yet, they are the first to get in line for this brand new swine flu vaccine. Funny.

Still on the fence. Kind of like the pp, my doc said something about pregnant women getting it & how their office was trying to make it available. But then I asked ,"so if you were me, would you get it?" and she said "probably not" because I don't work in a particularly high risk environment, don't have asthma or any other conditions, etc. The only reason I'm on the fence is because I ride public trans at least 2x a day.
Similar to pp, I'm not getting it either. It's too new and there hasn't been enough testing on it. My doctor (like all) is recommending it -- but I'll just keep my hand sanitizer and germ killers close by and hope for the best
I'm going to get both flu shots as soon as my 1st trimester is over (assuming and hoping that I get there!). The best arguments I've heard in favor of the shot are:
1. ?The shot is not "new" compared to previous flu shots. One doctor described it this way: "the regular seasonal flu vaccine is "new" every year. But it's not really new. The base components are completely the same. It is just the strain they grow and proteins they purify are different.? They are making the h1n1 vaccine exactly the same way. They're just purifying proteins of the h1n1 strain instead of seasonal flu strains. So you can't really think of this as a new vaccine... just different protiens (like we get every year)." ?Apparently, they would have put h1n1 into this season's regular flu shot, but they had already decided on and begun production of the shot before the outbreak happened.?
2. ?There are confirmed deaths of pregnant women from h1n1, because their immune systems are weakened. ?Fever from the flu has been shown to cause autism and schizophrenia. ?But there are no reported serious side effects from flu shots generally for pg women.
3. You can't get the flu from the flu shot -- it's a killed virus. People who got sick after getting a shot either happened to get a different virus or a strand that was not in the vaccine.
4. They're making a thimerosal-free version available for women who are concerned about that preservative.?
If anyone's interested, there's a really long and interesting thread on this on a different forum:

I know it's in reference to the regular flu shots but with the swine flu shot there is no reported side effects because basically all the pregnant women this year will be the guinea pigs. Not ok with me personally.

I think my decision would be different if I didn't work in a school. Here in TN we are having a serious outbreak of the flu already (H1N1 and the regular old flu), the CDC has us listed as "widespread." I was just in a meeting and several people used my pen to sign the paperwork. All of us have been working with tons of different children today. It is very very likely that one of those kids and possibly one of the adults have been exposed to the flu today... and I am sure some of those kids are contagious. The rest of the meeting I had to sit on my hands. I was so worried about putting my hands up to my face before I washed my hands. I do not want to live like this until May. We are sending sick children home daily with the flu. If I don't get the vaccines there is a good chance I will end up very sick, and that isn't a risk I am willing to take.
And I am not drinking any caffeine or eating lunch meat.

FYI - Just really be careful because they won't publicize this but one of the underlying causes of people dying of this flu is pregnancy. Pregnant women are the #1 priority in receiving this flu shot...
I heard you shouldn't get it until 2nd trimester, but I will be asking my doctor about it next week when I go in. If she recommends it, then I will be getting that as well as the regular flu shot.
I'm not sure. I was going to wait until I talk to my Midwife at my first appointment. I am kind of worried since last year the college campus where I am taking a few classes was shut down with a couple of outbreaks as well as some schools. I do like reading all the other inputs and reasons everyone has!
I am! I read ALOT about this today and this wasnt my first time doing so either but pregnant women are 4 times MORE likely to get it and 6% of the fatalities of H1N1 were pregnant women. The benefits FAAAAR outweigh the risk and I read you should not fear the vaccine, that it is as safe as a seasonal flu shot and if people dropped like flies every year we'd hear about it. If you think about it they come out with each seasons flu vaccine in about the same amount of time because the virus strains change from season to season; so this isnt anything out of the ordinary.
The #1 thing people can do is prevention and that means getting vaccinated so it doesnt spread and becom even MORE of a pandemic. I just heard today that " its estimated that 90,000 people could die in the UNITED STATES of H1N1" who wants to mess around with that.

actually this HAS been heavily publicized...
I am not decided for sure yet, but leaning towards getting it...will talk to my OB and pedi about it.

I was thinking this same thing!!! There is NO research on the babies once they are born or even at months or years... I think it's very scary. so that's a no for me and I'm a nurse. My OB highly recommends it and was surprised that I wouldn't be getting it considering I'm a nurse. But I just can't bring myself to potentially harming my baby b/c of it. IMO.
Re: H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccination???
I haven't decided yet
However, I was lurking on 2nd Tri board and someone posted this:

Maybe it will help some people decide, I don't know

Sorry so long -- I know this is a difficult choice for us all. I'm just deadly afraid of fever during pregnancy.

Thank you, finally someone with some intelligence!
