Wanted to Share a Great Stepmom Book!

I ordered this book and just got it yesterday. I've already read half of it and I love, love, love it! Just wanted to share in case anybody is looking for a book on being a stepmother! There is even a section for bio dads on what their role is. It also addresses adult step kids, difficult BM's (we all can relate there) and having "our" babies.

It's called The Smart Stepmom by Ron L. Deal and Laura Petherbridge (she's a stepmom of 20 years)

  • Ooooh! I'm going to have to get that.

  • Definitely looking into it! Thanks!
  • What is the philosophy on stepparenting? Does it say that SMs need to step back and let the bioparents handle things? Does it say tha tstepwives need to be buddy buddy?
  • didnt mean that to come out snarky, i was just trying to figure out whether i should buy it or not. I've been looking for a new stepmom book to read, but i am just so fed up with some of the philosophy.
  • No, it doesn't want step moms to step back but quite the opposite. They recognize just what an important role it is and it's harder than being a bio mom. It seems to focus on common household issues and dealing with common feeling we have and emotions. It also has real stories shared by other step moms and personal stories by the author.

It does see the BM as an "in law" and just how we sometimes have to deal with a difficult MIL or SIL , we have to deal with a BM. Like your MIL is being a pain in the a$$, but you don't cuss her out for the sake of your DH cause it's his mother kinda thing. You try to work together as best you can for the sake of the kids. It is big on the bio father stepping up as the primary disciplinarian & demanding respect from the children to the SM and how to gain respect & trust from kids. The best part of it is the personal stories and how they got thru the issue.

I will say it is Christian based. At the end of each chapter it has a prayer that touches on the subject of the chapter if that happens to be the issue you're dealing with. It can be skipped over.

  • OMG it's early morning in Ireland but I clearly need more coffee, I read the title as The Smart Stepmom by Roald Dahl - lol.
