Are there any antidepressants safe while nursing?

DS is almost weaned, only nursing twice a day now. Are there any meds that are safe while nursing or should I just wait to talk to my doctor until he is fully weaned.

Re: Are there any antidepressants safe while nursing?

  • My OB wrote me a script for Lexapro once DD was born because I had been taking Welbutrin during my pregnancy.  She suggested it was better to be on if I was going to nurse.  Then, within weeks, I decided to wean and FF DD so I stuck with the Welbutrin.   She said either would have been fine, but she preferred Lexapro out of all of them.  IDK.

  • The current literature seems to show that Zoloft has the lowest detectable levels in BM (with many mothers showing no detectable levels); therefore, it's often recommended as the first medication choice for BFing mothers.  Other SSRIs (like Lexapro) haven't been evaluated as extensively in BFing moms as Zoloft, so it may well be equally safe - but just don't have the research to back it up :)

    ETA:  Here's a helpful article:

Also, checking pubmed.gov is also a good resource for searching empirically supported, peer-reviewed medical journal articles discussing the topic :)

  • I meant to add that I was on Zoloft for PPD while nursing DS.

  • I am on Zoloft. It's considered the safest while nursing.
